A few months had passed since Phoebe's death. While Mystic Falls without her was quiet and lifeless, the lives of those who once knew Phoebe were worse. Caroline and Liz barely spoke to each other. Tyler had left town. Jeremy was sleeping around and no matter what Damon and Elena did, he was not reigning it in and refused to come home half of the time. Damon and Elena also had their hands full with Jeremy and Stefan. They had been working together and with Lexi to get Stefan back after he had flipped his switch yet again. Matt threw himself into work so he did not have to see the others. Rebekah, who was heartbroken after losing her best friend and her brother within months of each other, spent most of her time abroad. Elijah had left town straight after Phoebe's funeral and Klaus was the only one who remained. Alaric threw himself into vampire hunting after word got out that Phoebe was dead, paving way for many vampires who yearned for revenge after her reign of terror. Finally, Bonnie was hellbent on getting Jeremy back.
It was a Wednesday night. It had been raining heavily, but that did not deter Stefan. He threw aside the body he had just fed from with such force, the woman's bloody flesh began to ooze out from her wounds. Rebekah smirked as she dropped her own dead victim.
"Room for one more?" Rebekah asked softly.
"You got back, what, 20 minutes ago?" Stefan looked at the compelled woman and stopped. She had blonde hair and sparkling green eyes, reminding him eerily of Phoebe.
Rebekah had noticed too and she could not tear her gaze away from the woman. She walked towards her slowly and sighed. "Go away, run before we kill you. You will not remember any of this." They watched as the woman got into her car and drove off, leaving her dead friend there.
Rebekah wrapped her arms around herself and sighed as she walked along Wickery Bridge. Stefan watched her and exhaled. He looked back and walked towards his car, in search for another victim.
At the Forbes residence, Liz was trying to complete her work. When her pen stopped working, she exhaled and scribbled hard. When it did not work again, she exhaled and threw it across the room. Her eyes began to sting, but Liz sniffed hard and stood up to find another pen. She opened a drawer in the kitchen and began to look through. Her fingers brushed against something and she froze when she saw something. It was a Polaroid. Liz picked it up gingerly and smiled. It was a photograph of Phoebe and Caroline in London. "God, what I would give to have those days back." Liz cleared her throat and walked to the fridge. Once she had stuck the Polaroid on the fridge with magnets, she stood back and stared at it. A few minutes later, Liz was engrossed with her work. There was a knock on the front door and Liz looked up from her paperwork. "Who is it?"
"Mom? It's me. Please, mom, I miss you,"
Liz sighed and walked towards the door before she opened it just a fraction. "You should not be here. What do you want?"
"Mom." Caroline sighed. "I am sorry about what happened, but trust me, I didn't know she... I'm sorry." Caroline had tears in her eyes and Liz sighed as she pulled the door open. "Please don't turn me away again, I can't bear it. I miss you, mommy,"
Liz looked conflicted. Finally, she sighed and stepped to the side. "Hang on, I need to invite you in." Liz murmured. "Come in, Caroline."
Caroline walked in and looked at her mother sadly. A tear fell and Liz pulled her only daughter into a warm hug. "I'm sorry, mom." Caroline said as she rested her cheek on her mother's shoulder. This was the first time they had hugged in months.
"I know, honey, I know." Liz murmured. A sudden movement caught her eye and she stared at the door. Liz stiffened and Caroline turned around.
"Bonnie? I told you to wait in the care while I-" Caroline looked at her mother.
