Forever and Always (Calum)

I'm sitting at the table, the hour is getting later. He was supposed to be here. I was so sure he would have called. I wait a little longer, there's no one in the driveway. I call up some of his friends but no one said they've seen him. I call Luke, his best friend. If anyone knew where he was it would be Luke.

"Luke, have you seen Calum?" I ask as I bite my lip.

"No. Why is something wrong?"

"Maybe... He's not home yet."

"He's probably just stuck in traffic. But I'll let you know if I hear from him."

I look back to the window. Suddenly the phone rings and I jump, startled.

"Hello?"

"Hello this is City Hospital. I'm afraid that there's been an accident. Your fiance asked us to call you. You should come right now," a voice said on the line. I stutter out a reply as I run for the door slipping into shoes and grabbing my jacket.

My mind goes to December, when he asked me to marry him. He had gotten on one knee and I had been so happy. He had said the sweetest things.

"I want you forever. Forever and always. Through the good and the bad and the ugly. We'll grow old together. Forever and always."

I pull up to the hospital. I park and run to the front desk. I give the nurse there my name and Calum's. She smiles sadly at me as she motions for another nurse to take me to his room. She leads me down a million halls, a maze that's never ending. We meet his doctor and he explains what's happened but I barely hear him. I slowly push open the door and walk to his bedside, sitting in the chair there. I hold his hand probably too tight but he doesn't say anything.

"Oh, Calum," I sob as he tries to smile at me.

"Shh, Baby girl, it's okay," his voice is scratchy. He's bruised and has stitches above his left eye. His leg is in a cast. He has in an oxygen tube in his nose. His heart monitor is irregular. Without even being told, I know it's too late for him. And I break down again.

"So I was thinking at least three kids," he spoke up. I gave him a teary smile.

"And a dog of course."

"And we'll live in that house on the hillside that you love so much," he grinned.

"And we'll stay there forever."

"Forever and always."

I looked up at the nurse, an idea coming to mind.

"Call up the Chaplin. Call in all the nurses," I turned to Calum again, smiling "I'll be right back." I kiss his forhead and make my way to the couple in the waiting room down the hall. I quickly explain our situation and invite them into Calum's room. The couple lend us their wedding rings just as the Chaplin says a few verses. Everybody's laughing as tears fall to the floor. I look into Calum's eyes.

"I want you forever. Forever and always. Through the good and the bad and the ugly. We'll grow old together. Always remember, whether happy or sad or whatever. We'll still love each other. Forever and always."

I finish my vows but the beeps are getting too slow...

Calum's voice is almost too low to hear...

"I love you forever. Forever and always. Please just remember even if I'm not there. I'll always love you, forever and always...."
