"He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."
-Friedrich Nietzche

[YOUR P.O.V]

"Frisk? Frisk!" The mountain is steep as hell. How Frisk managed, you'll never truly understand. It's a hard workout, and you aren't the most fit person in the world. Your (h/c) hair is sweaty and gross. It's plastered to your face now. An ache forms within you. Your heart is thudding in your chest, screaming at you to go home.
Turn back!
Stay away.
I'll kill you.
I'll kill them all!
The voice that seems to scream in the back of your subconscious is hesitantly ignored. You're determined to find your best friend, Frisk. They've been missing for a week now. After you two fought, they ran away and didn't come back. You still don't know why you fought with Frisk. It was entirely your fault for treating them that way. Frisk is a little sibling to you. Since you're nearing eighteen and they're only twelve, you've always taken care of them, too.
Even though the both of you are so far apart in age, it's obvious who the mature one is: the power duo, the villagers say. Both of you are orphans, but you live with a man named Haynes. You try to cling onto the hope that you, Haynes, and Frisk will be sitting around a fire drinking hot cocoa tomorrow night.
But you doubt that's going to happen because of what you said. Man, Haynes would be so mad if he knew what you did. The night Frisk left suddenly flashes in your mind, making you even more pissy.

[ONE WEEK PRIOR]

As a pair, stretched underneath sparkling stars, you're cuddled up on a patch of dainty golden flowers. The stars twinkle above, you imagine suddenly that they're waving hello to you. A lazy smile stretches across your face as you start to drift away...
But Frisk, like they do every single night, interrupts.
"Long ago, two races ruled over the Earth. Humans, and monsters," Frisk says. You groan out loud. They've told you this story a million times over, and yet... Frisk is fascinated. There was always something about the monsters that captivated them. You weren't sure why. Whenever you thought about them, you felt guilty.
"Frisk, c'mon," you complain. "Not this again. You tell this story over and over, I'm tired of it."
"One day, war broke out between the two races." They don't stop. Even though Frisk is significantly younger than you, and you shouldn't be mad about their passions... something inside you still feels angry about it. Why do you have to hear this tale over and over, huh? What's it to you? Should you really feel empathy for a bunch of monster saps?
But Frisk, ignoring your obvious frustration, continues speaking. Their tone is soft and gentle. Frisk doesn't speak much, but when they do, it's quite powerful.
"After a long battle, the humans were victorious. They sealed the monsters underground with a magical spell." Frisk trails off, and you take this as your opportunity to interrupt.
"And?" You snap. "Frisk, monster lore is okay. But I really don't care anymore." They sit up on their elbow and look at you, obvious fear and wariness in their eyes.
"But... (y/n). The monsters, they're important. Don't you feel called to them? As if... you should help them?" You sit up and cross your arms, letting out a scoff. Frisk sniffles, you've obviously upset them. But you continue on pushing your point.
"I doubt there's even one monster I could ever care for," you say in a snarky tone. "Who cares about the story? They are all going to stay down there until they die, or just fade away." Frisk is crying now. They're scared of you. The malice in your voice is real, and you don't know where it came from. You bite your lip to keep from speaking any more, but all the words have already been said. You can't take them back.
"You're wrong about them," Frisk says, standing up. In one hand they hold the strange stick they carry around wherever they go. "I'm going to prove to you that you're wrong. You'll see. There's one that does care about you. He'll help you, (y/n). It won't be like all the times before. I'll take the hit this time." Sometimes you find that eerie about Frisk. It's as if they already know what's going to happen. Frisk walks up, and kisses your forehead. You let them grumpily, but only cause you're thinking.
Sometimes you have dreams. Awful dreams of a bright blue light, and...
And the snow.
But they're just dreams. You don't know the future, and neither does Frisk. Right?
By the time you pull yourself out of your thoughts, Frisk is gone.
Little did you know that it would be a long time before you would see the actual Frisk again.

A minute ago it was sweltering hot. But as you pull out of your daze and stare into the chasm that stretches out before you... you realize that it's snowing. Even though it's irrational and silly of you, a shiver runs down your spine.
Snow.
The cold.
Nightmares...
Your breath is coming out in gasps, your heart is racing. It takes a moment for you to reason with yourself and pull out of the daze that you're in.
Yes, it's snowing. That's okay, right? Right. No problem here.
Yes, the temperature is dropping drastically. You crack your knuckles, feeling extremely anxious. You remember things you would really rather forget.
Yes, all the nightmares you've had over the years show scene such as this. But...
You don't have an uplifting answer. In fact, you're scared out of your mind. Frisk pops into your mind. They're down in that chasm, probably. With all of the monsters. Knowing Frisk, they're probably trying to reason with all of them. They're will need you to protect them. You're eighteen. They are younger than you are... you have to buck up and save them.
But how to get down?
You peer over into the pit and take a step closer. The abyss stares into you, but not for long. A vine seems to appear out of nowhere and you catch on your foot. The fall happens in slow motion in your eyes.
You fall, and everything is black as the abyss swallows you whole.
