"I WISH . . . "

"So, you're going to bring them all back?" Sans is still holding your hand. You wonder what the two of you are. It's strange. You said you wouldn't let him back in, but he managed to slide into your heart.

Honestly, you're appalled. So you don't answer. It kind of angers you on how this funny skeleton can manage that even though you've put up so many walls. Sans picks up on your quiet frustration (fond frustration, mind you.)

"You ignoring me, buddy?" He gives your hand a squeeze. You let out a sigh, and watch your breath. The air is cold, it's nice to have a warm hand in yours. You can't take this moment for granted. All you've done in the past is take things for granted.

"Yeah. I was thinking we'd go to Grillby's and I could do it from there." Sans' eyes light up. This makes you smile, but it immediately fades away. Can you do it without passing out this time?

Every time you bring them back, it feels like part of you dies.

Sans notices you hesitate as you two stop in front of Grillby's. He opens the door for you, like a proper gentleman.

"Sans, what about Papyrus?" His smile fades, like he knows something you don't. It isn't a happy look. You're immediately worried. "Sans? What's wrong? I've been thinking and there's no way that you can stay-"

"We can talk about this later." His teeth are gritted, and he pulls away from you. Your hand is left feeling incredibly empty. "There's a lot I remember and you don't." Feeling a bit insulted, you cross your arms.

"It's different this time, right?" Sans gives you a patient smile. It cools you down, but you're still pretty pissed. You're the time wizard here, not him! Technically, nobody can die under your watch. You can just bring them back.

There's nothing to fear.

"Okay," he simply says. But you keep going.

"We're going to fix all of this. Everything is going to be better this time." You sound like you are trying to convince yourself more than him. It's not working. He's still wearing a smile significantly sadder than his regular one.

(you cannot save people, you can only love them.)

"Okay." Patting your back gently, he pushes you toward the door. You open your mouth to argue, but decide against it. "Let's go inside, where it's warm." You can't argue with that. You both step into Grillby's.

There's an immediate increase in temperature, even though nobody is in here.

You can hear the laughter that has filled this room timeline after timeline. You run your hand across the table, then sit down. Sans sits across from you, watching intently.

It takes a lot to concentrate with him looking at you like that.

Somehow, you manage.

Images appear in front of you. Monster after monster comes to you. It's like a moth to a flame; you call out into the darkness of the past. Every one, just like the ruins, you have to talk to.

You wonder why you didn't have to do that with Papyrus.

Learning name after name is hard for you. But they are all so friendly. You don't just reach out to the monsters who have entered Grillby's. It's the whole surrounding area you focus on. You meet so many of them. Dog after dog, especially. They are quite excitable. It's appalling.
