The female monster held her ground, but you shivered. Chara wasn't your name, but... instead, the name of the child who went missing not too long ago. So, why did you feel so guilty all of a sudden?

She only continued to stare at you, awaiting a response before she sighed, unable to harm a cowering thing, even if she believed you were someone much more diabolical. "Come, child. It's best we leave before that terrible thing returns." She did not offer her hand as she turned her back on you- a very bad idea if you truly were Chara (why? well, you didn't know quite yet)- and you were not one to wander too far behind, actually finding comfort in the silence and slight tension directed towards you.

You both weren't walking for long by the time you reached a room with spikes on the ground (the first puzzle with two switches already having been activated). The female hesitated, stepping on one of the plates and extending a hand toward you. Eventually you took hold, eyeing the ground cautiously as she lead you along a hidden trail, your heartbeat skyrocketing. By the time you made it to the other side, you released a gasp of air that you didn't know you were holding in, catching a brief look of amusement across the goat-lady's face before it snapped back to eerie coldness. Perhaps she was warming up to you?

Minutes after a few more puzzles (and a free piece of monster candy), you reached an open area with leaves scattered around a dead tree. You blinked at its surprising beauty, though still clinging close to the woman who called herself Toriel. You thought it was a cute name compared to yours, but she simply dismissed it by offering you a slice of leftover butterscotch-cinnamon pie.

Whether you liked either or was out of the question, your stomach clawing at itself as it waited to be satisfied. It was at that moment you noticed that you hadn't eaten anything since that morning, in which it was probably now nighttime and your fosters were most likely panicking about your safety... They were dumb like that. You could very much take care of yourself.

Toriel sat down on a large, comfy-looking chair next to the fire, raising a book that read "101 Snail Uses" on the cover. You bit into the warm, goo-filled pie with pleasure, pondering over how she could have gotten it perfectly golden-brown before she looked up at you, a seemingly flustered glint in her eyes before she cleared her throat. "I'm assuming you're not Chara. My apologies for seeming so harsh when we just met."

You shook your head, mouth stuffed with a large bite of the pie as you watched her gaze at the fireplace sorrowfully. "Not too long ago, another human child fell in here. I did my best to teach them MERCY and show them how to be good... I invited them to stay... but they wanted to go back home so desperately that they changed." She paused, voice cracking momentarily. "They spared me, but I've heard from the kind man behind the Ruin's door that they have been killing many, many people... one of them being his brother. I felt so bad, but... there's nothing I... I could do..."

Toriel's eyes were now overflowing with tears, though she tried to hide them behind her book, wiping them off on her sleeves carefully. Your heart ached to see her like this, and so you crossed over to your new friend, resting a hand gently on her head to the best of your ability (as you were still much shorter than her).

After a few moments the tension vanished, and she was soon smiling warmly at you, pleased with your actions. "Thank you. What is your name, child?"

You opened your mouth to speak, forming the words easily:

      "Frisk."
