It was about nine o'clock, and the full moon was steadily rising over Mako Island, home of the southern pod of mermaids.

Mako Island was a beautiful island, but also known to be dangerous... It had lovely landscape filled with trees and nature, but was also known to be covered in snakes and mosquitoes.... The waters around it were crystal blue, but were known to be shark's territory.... And the main focus of the island was of the volcano, which stood to one side of the island, big, tall, and proud. The volcano, however was an 'Extinct Volcano', which means it had not erupted for thousands of years, and it was never able to erupt again.

Because of this, the inside of the volcano was hollow, and at the very bottom, there was a huge pool of water, which the mermaids called 'The Moon Pool', and they call it this, because if you lay on your back floating in the water and looked up; you'd be able to see the moon passing by the volcano in the sky.

Every full moon the mermaids would go to the surrounding water of Mako, and charge up their moon rings. Each mermaid would train to receive a moon ring, and each moon ring had a beautiful blue stone, which was able to collect and store the power of the moon, which helped strengthen the mermaid's magical powers.

That night, all the mermaids were charging up their moon rings, so they didn't know that their was an intruder on their island...

A young man, with dark blonde hair in a quiff flicked to his right side, was busy striding through the forest of Mako Island. Sometimes land people occasionally visited Mako Island for camping trips, but that was not the reason he was here.

This young man, was on the island for a complete different reason... For he was actually a merman. A merman, with a mission...

He was speed walking to the volcano, where there was a huge gap in the wall, which only opened on a full moon. He entered confidently and walked down the dimly lit pathway until he entered a big, circular room. This room was completely black, except from in the centre, where there was a huge carving of the head of a trident in the stone flooring.

A few inches away there was a big pedestal made of rock. And on top of the pedestal, if you looked carefully you could see five symbols: one of the trident head, one of a circle (representing the moon), a circle with a hole in the middle (representing the Moon Pool), one of a semi circle covered by wavy lines (signalising the moon rising above the water) and one of a thin trapezium (symbolising the volcano of Mako Island).

There were also huge streaks of blue coming from the floor to the ceiling, enclosing the trident carving and stone pedestal. And if you looked up, you could see a picture of the stars, and the moon when it passed over the Mako Volcano.

This special, but dangerous place, was the Merman Chamber, built by mermen centuries before, originally created to draw away the power from the Moon Pool, therefore drawing the power from all mermaids. The Chamber had never been fully activated by its original creators.

The young man made his way to the pedestal full of symbols. He stood silently, gazing at the symbols for a few moments, before waving his hand over them, slowly. And when he did, all the symbols glowed a deep, rich blue colour.

"I was wondering what time you were going to arrive," said a voice to his left.

The young man wasn't scared. He turned his head slightly, to see a young girl, with dark red hair and a round face looking back at him, her hands on her hips.

"You're late," she told him.

The young man shrugged. "I had to take the long way, because of all the mermaids and their moon celebration." His voice was deep and low.
