I.
Some songs hurt to sing-
We found out standing in the snow with dirges on our lips
While shadows stole breath from your heart-shaped mouth
I stood in dark light behind cracked lids and felt that pulse
Trapped under my skin- where did yours run to
When it left?
II.
So they hid you behind varnished wood
Between sour scented silk cushions and cold permafrosted dirt
You were supposed to find a thing called rest
But I didn't believe for an instant that your time was up
Since you've been pressing frozen hands through my face every
Night for weeks.
III.
But I never scream
Because your eyes are still as black as ink
The sun rises and disappears you
Leaving me to candy-colored bottles and bitter pens against paper
Phantasms are only train wrecks of lives when your heart
Is buried in someone else's fist.
