*My first major story! Comment please:)*

Prologue

Jessica Evans sat on her lawn chair in her backyard, tanning and sipping lemonade. The air smelt like fresh cut grass and apples; it was mid-afternoon on a beautiful Saturday in the middle of summer. The sun was hot, the pool was sparkling, and it was another blissful day in Applewood, North Carolina.

Jessica would be starting eighth grade in the fall, and she couldn't be more excited. For the last few weeks of summer, she planned to tan, shop, and flirt her butt off so she would remain the meanest and most popular girl in the whole middle school. With not a cloud in the sky, she felt all her worries float down her mind.

"CANNONBALL!" sounded behind her. Before Jessica had time to react, her dorky twin sister Adrian whipped past her and dove right into the pool, splashing Jessica and her magazines. Adrian surfaced and giggled.

Jessica growled. Her sister had been shipped off to a mental hospital when she was eight; it was her first time home in a while. And what do you know! She was staying. Permanently. Her sister would ruin eighth grade for her!

Adrian was the definition of a dork. The last five years in the nut hut left her fashionably clueless (wearing Macy's clothes- shudder) and sociably clueless. Her idea of entertainment was watching Animal Planet and Tom& Jerry. Their parents wanted the two to bond by sharing a room, but that so not working out. Adrian was a compulsive neat freak and Jessica was messy. Adrian put up National Geographic posters everywhere, hogging up space for Jessica's shirtless Taylor Lautner posters.

"Hey sis! Jump in!" Adrian shouted. She was too loud, too annoying, and too...Adrian-ish.

"No thanks, swimming is for losers." Jessica smirked.

"Okay, we could do something else! Like maybe watch some Sherlock Holmes, go shopping at JC Penny's, or even bake cookies!"

"A- Sherlock Holmes is for dorks. He is so obviously far into the closet and crime shows are lame ass. B- JC Penny is also for dorks. I refuse to wear anything mass produced or made from polyester. C- cookies have calories, calories I can't afford to gain." Jessica bitterly stated.

Adrian's face fell. "Okay, maybe some other time" she called out. She really wanted to hang out with her sister, but her sister kept rejecting her. She didn't rememeber anyone from here; it had all been too long ago. Adrian frowned. There was nothing wrong with crime shows- they were educational and fascinating. JC Penny had discount clothes and cute styles. And cookies were delicious! Not even a mean sister could break her down and make her change herself. Someone will love me for who I am, she told herself.

Jessica felt a tad guilty, but anyone who found out they were living with a dork surely would've reacted similiar. Maybe, maybe if Jessica could transform her into a beautiful someone like herself, things would be better. Jessica opened her mouth to call out to her sister when she heard murmering inside the house. She crept to the glass french doors and squatted next to them. She ignored her sister's presence right next to her, breathing down her neck.

"Jess- maybe we shouldn't-"

"Shh! Trying to spy here!" Jessica put her finger to her lips.

The murmering turned to shouting, it sounded like both of her parents. They'd been fighting every since Adrian returned.

"We never should have pulled her out! This could ruin my campaign! Having a sick daughter at home is not a good idea!" She could hear her dad shout.

"I DON'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS ABOUT YOUR DAMN CAMPAIGN! You know good and well Adrian is just fine! The doctors said she was healthy and right in the mind now. You're picking favorites, aren't you? I know you've always favored Jessica. You may not see it, but all Jessica cares about is herself, her friends, and tormenting those she doesn't like. Have you heard the way she speaks to Adrian?!" Her mom shouted back equally as loud.

"Elizabeth, you know how much this campaign means to me! Being the mayor of Applewood has always been a dream of mine! And oh please, Jessica is a fine and lovely young lady."

"I. CAN'T. BELIEVE. YOU! I'm leaving. I mean it John, I can't love someone who loves himself more. I can't even look at you." Her mother slammed a few things, and stormed upstairs."

"Oh my gosh..." Jessica whispered. Her family was falling apart. And it was partly her fault. She turned to Adrian, who was fighting tears. Good. "This is all your fault, you know."

Adrian whipped her head, her eyes huge. "My fault?!"

"Yeah" Jessica said cooly. "Ever since you returned, they've been fighting. Way to go."

Adrian's jaw trembled. She buried her face in her hands. She ran away before Jessica could take back what she said.

Jessica ran her hand through her long, curly chocolate brown hair. What had she just done? She went into the house and sat on the couch. She didn't turn on the TV or press play on her iPod, she just curled in a fetal position. Her mom came downstairs holding multiple suitcases. Adrian followed her, also clad suitcases. Her dad, who was in the kitchen turned to see them storm outside. Adrian shot Jessica an expressionless glance, before turning her back to her.

That was the last time Jessica would see her sister for three more years.
