It all started two months ago, when her mom invited their neighbor over for a barbeque.
"Mom, is this really necessary." Paige whined to her mom as she carried the plates out to the porch. "I mean, it's not like we don't know each other."
Her mom gave her a warm smile and she arranged the table. "Sweetheart, it's not all about you. Your dad and Mr. Mattson had been planning this since forever and I was really hoping to catch up with Mrs. Mattson."
"And we all know how much you like their son. It's a serendipity. Don't waste your chance, sweetie." She winked at him.
"Mom!" She glared at him in horror but her mom just laughed it off.
Later that evening, Paige stood in front of the mirror, staring at her own reflection. Her make up was on point, her cute custom-made blue summer dress hugged her body well, emphasizing each and every curve in a way that would make the Victoria Secret's models jealous.
It doesn't matter though. The boy she wanted to impress already had his eyes on another girl.
......
"Cyane, are you okay?"
Her mom sends her to check on him after he took a fifteen minutes bathroom break and was still not returning.
"I'm...fine."
Paige's eyes widened when he exited the bathroom. His face looked pale, his eyes lost all its color as they stared at her with a dull and pained look. Worst of all...
"Is that...is that blood on your shirt?" She had her palm over her mouth.
He hurried over to her. "Cover for me, please? I'll just go home and grab a new shirt."
She nodded weakly as she watched him took the back door.
That night, she was the first one to know he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
That night, was the night where everything changed.
