My feet guided me to my first period classroom where I was expecting to see a familiar frown upon my face. I didn't want to be hit with the paper that was counted as twenty-five percent of my grade. That was a big amount and I didn't want to get my test to see it wouldn't sum up as anything to me. I needed these grades and I was determined to work hard for it. The only problem with my plan would be actually getting teachers to keep me in their classrooms so I can actually learn something during the hour.
I took a seat in my usual chair beside Jayden who seemed to be occupied with his fingers than were tangling around themselves in knots. He was nervous and it was easy to see by the sweat slowly dripping down his forehead. It's a cold day today and everyone seems to be wrapped up in lairs. He must be very, very nervous if he's able to drip warm water particles down his body. "Jayden, it's a test paper, you need to calm down" I chuckled pulling out the seat plopping down onto it smoothly.
"Do you know how much I need this? I've already done all the required exams and this is the last one I need to get that A*. It's actually a lot harder to earn than you think it could be" he took in a shaky breath clearly portraying worry and unawareness. Wow this kid was more of a geek than I can ever imagine and it was something surprising me with greatness. "This is the last thing I need before I am off for the rest of the school year, I won't have to come back until graduation" he laced his hands together as if praying for the god above.
"Diane Thompson" Miss Jackson read out my name from the list minutes later telling me to come up and get my test paper from her. My legs flattened themselves as I walked over to her desk taking my upside paper. She was trying to hide my grade and I was glad from that. Anyone that was seated in front of her could get a decent view. I didn't want to share this with anyone if it's nothing I'm proud of. As soon as I do, I'm pretty sure the word will get around fairly quickly.
A* was written inside the outline of the circle drawn at the top of the paper. My stomach erupted with happiness as I realized all my hard work had finally paid off. "Diane, well done. It's the best score you've ever gotten in my class" Miss Jackson shot me a sweet smile as I looked up at her from my paper. The letter and the sign was worth all the hard work. If this was something that everyone felt when they got the grade they wanted then I wouldn't mind keeping up with them. I'd never felt this before.
"Hey, um Diane. This is for you" Jayden handed me a mug just as I took the first step out of the classroom. The Starbucks logo was painted on the cardboard piece and I wondered what it was for until I saw the writing on it. 'Diane Lee Thompson...would you like to go to prom with me?' I read the words inside my mind instantly feeling a smile spread across my face. He sure didn't go all out but this was the way to get a girl like me to say yes. It was simple as, foods and drinks were my weakness, if you ever got them for me then I'd love you forever.
I painted a 'yes' on the mug with the pink sharpie I kept in my blazer pocket. I looked around to see Sean walking by. "Hey Sean" I yelled at my friend whom I hadn't spoken to in a while. His body spun around to face me and I realized that autographed smirk hadn't managed to remove itself from his face. Did his jaw never break or was it just in his genes to stay in position. It freaked me out sometime while at others it got under my skin. He always looked at me like that and I wasn't comfortable with that. It's something I can't handle. "Can you give this to Jayden?" I asked not waiting for a greeting back.
"Um sure. Hey I was kind of wondering. Would like to accompany a very needy and desperate friend to prom?" His eyebrows knitted together in questioning and almost instantly, my heart fell down straight to my stomach knitting slowly and agonisingly. I felt sorry for him but I've already accepted Jayden. I wasn't planning on going with anyone anyways seeing as today is the last day you can actually ask someone so that's a problem in itself.
