Exactly One Year, Two Months, and Seventeen Days Later
“I’m so sorry!” I apologized for the millionth time to the nurse pushing my wheel chair with impressive speed. I gritted my teeth together as another wave of pure unpleasantness hit.
The nurse laughed softly, though never slowing her pace. “Oh, it’s alright, ma’am.”
I clutched my stomach, biting my lip so as not to cry out. I didn’t wanna seem like such a baby. “Almost there?”
“Almost there.”
Oh thank God! “There wouldn’t happen to be some kind of drug you can give me to numb all pain, would there?”
The nurse laughed softly. “No, ma’am, I’m sorry. All I can give you is the epidural, and that will only take a bit of the pain away.”
“Give me that!” I snapped.
The nurse soon parked me in a delivery room and had two other nurses help me up into the bed.
“Where the hell is Dr. Nash?” I growled, groaning as another contraction hit.
“He’s coming, ma’am,” a different nurse, blonde, assured me.
“Is there anyone you need us to call?” the nurse who had pushed my wheelchair asked. “Your husband or…..?”
I snorted. “I’m not married. And there’s no one you can call who would ever make it here on time.”
“Well, labor takes quite a while,” the blonde nurse offered.
I glared at her. “Thank you for that!” A wave of panic hit me as hard as the next contraction did. “Oh, God….I can’t do this! I really can’t!”
The wheelchair nurse gripped my fingers tightly. “It’s going to be all right.” She smiled. “Think of seeing your baby for the first time. Being able to hold him. You can do this, alright.”
“Dr. Nash!” the blonde nurse gasped in relief.
The middle aged man smiled at me, taking his time putting his gloves on and such. “Well, looks like we’ve got a baby on the way.”
H walked epically slow to take a peak. He swore under his breath. “Well, he’s on the way, alright!” And the room suddenly sprung into action.
Admittedly, I didn’t remember anything but the pain. It was like doing the splits on a stick of dynamite. But suddenly, with one final agonizing push, there was a small, watery cry and they were presenting my baby boy to me.
An hour later, after everything was calm, the doors to my new room burst open. My heart went into a frenzy at the sight of Josh, his dark hair a crazy mess and his eyes wild. He looked so out of place here with his rock-star looks.
He stopped right at the door, staring at the baby in my arms. He ran a hand through his hair. “So you really had the baby, then…”
“I didn’t think you’d come!” I laughed softly, trying not to wake the baby. “Didn’t you have a concert in Philly?”
Josh stepped into the room very carefully, eyes glued to the tiny bundle in the crook of my arm. “Wow, now. You didn’t actually think I could have a concert while you were having a baby all by yourself, did you? I’m just sorry I took so long.”
I smiled tiredly. “It doesn’t matter. You’re here now.”
Josh cleared his throat and sat in the chair beside my bed. “So, uh…..what’d you name him?”
“I wanted to wait, see what you thought.”
He looked up at me, startled.
“Well, he is your baby, too, moron,” I chided.
“Uh, well….” Josh ran his hand through his hair once again. I couldn’t help but smile as saw the unmistakenable glint of tears in his eyes. He looked back up at me with dead-set determination. “Robyn.”
“Yes?”
“Now will you marry me?” he asked, well, more like demanded, really.
I laughed softly. “I think you’ve had to wait long enough.”
He stood up and bent over me, grinning. “Ya think?” He leaned down and kissed me like he never had before. And while he kissed me, he slyly slipped the ring he had been trying to give me for the past year onto my finger.
“I love you,” I murmured against his lips.
He pressed his forehead to mine, slipping his finger into his baby’s tiny hand. “I love you.”
And we lived happily ever after.
THE
END
A/N I don’t care how cliché the “happily ever after” is; Josh deserved it. I kinda really actually am in love with this ending, though. I really liked this short story. Definitely gonna do more song inspired short stories!
Saying goodbye to two more characters with a happy ending!
