This is a theory about Crookshanks.
Potters had a cat just like Crookshanks. What if Crookshanks was the Potters' cat. o_o Because in the 3rd book Crookshanks was talking to the black dog which was Sirius. Maybe Sirius and James showed their animagus form the cat. That might be why Crookshanks knew the dog, Sirius.
