While Matt and I continued to talk almost every night, we didn't have any more long phone calls by the time exams came around. He'd call me to make sure everything was going okay with the pregnancy and then he'd have to go study.
I knew this was going to happen but I hadn't expected to feel so sad about it. I guess I'd just gotten too used to having Matt to talk to every night and it felt weird not talking to him for hours on end.
One night in the middle of Matt's exams my phone rang early and I jumped at it. "Hello?"
A breathy laugh came from the other end. "Hey girl! Expecting Matt to call?"
I blushed. "I don't know what you're talking about, Bree."
"Sure you don't. I'm sure you're that excited to answer the phone when work calls, aren't you?"
"Maybe I do. Your sarcasm is not wanted here."
She laughed. "Okay, okay. I'll play nice. So how's the whole baby mama thing treating you? Are you about ready to pop?"
I giggled. "Bree, I'm still a month away from my due date. The boys aren't escaping anytime soon."
"Boo! I was hoping you'd be able to come out drinking with me soon."
"It'll take a little bit more than giving birth for me to be ready to start drinking again. There's this new thing called breast feeding where anything the mother takes in her babies get some of, too. I know you might not have heard about it yet but I'd really rather not have my kids having any alcohol until they're a little bit older than they are right now."
"Whatever. As long as they don't turn you sober forever I guess I'll be able to forgive them for stealing you away from me for so long. They must be mega adorable, though!"
I laughed. "Of course they will be. And have you been bugging Whitney this much, too?"
"You know it! My two best friends are both sober at the same time which leaves me with nobody awesome to go out partying with."
"Then you'll just have to be sober with us. Or go out with Nikki."
She sighed over dramatically. "I guess."
"So was there anything else you wanted?"
"I get it, get off the phone so you can wait for Matt to call. Tell him I say hi, okay?"
I sighed. "I was actually going to call Whitney but I'll let Matt know when I talk to him next."
"So he'll know later tonight then," she said with a superior tone. "Sticking with your midnight phone calls even though you should be resting as much as possible at this point?"
"We talk at like eight, thank you very much. And I'm resting enough."
She laughed. "I'll come by sometime next week when you're not so jumpy, alright?"
I beamed at the phone. "That would be awesome! I'm so bored cooped up in my house like this!"
"I bet. Talk at you later."
"Ttfn!"
Once I was off the phone with Bree I called Whitney's home number. Tyler picked up after the second ring.
"Hey there Tyler. Is Whitney available?"
"She just lied down but I don't think she's asleep yet."
"Oh. Tell her to call me back when she wakes up, then."
He chuckled. "It's okay, I'm sure she'll be happy for the excuse to stay up a little more. She's been complaining that she's trapped in the house so talking to you might help a little bit."
