"Mom, I'm home!" Dani's voice came from the front door. Jane got up to go find her, but Dani entered the living room before Jane could stop her. "Emma!" She shrieked in excitement. "What are you doing here?"
I faked a smile, or maybe it was real, and answered before Jane could. "I'm staying the night."
Her face lit up. "Cool, just like old times!"
Jane then intervened. "Danielle, your father will be home soon with supper. Why don't you go wash up?" Dani could sense that something was wrong, but she knew better than to ask. Her face was still an open book, that hadn't changed. I did the math; she was probably in sixth grade now.
Juliette was a freshman; I knew that because we went to the same school. Dani still went to their private grade school.
Juliette and I had an odd relationship. Even though we had uniforms, which were new to her that year, she dressed differently than I did. She was one of the people who always got their skirts hemmed so they were just a little shorter than the dress code allowed. She always wore a lot of jewelry and makeup. I on the other hand wore only earrings, rings, and a ponytail on one of my wrists. I never curled or straightened my hair like Juliette, mine was too thick so it took too long and I was too lazy to get up earlier in the morning than necessary. Nonetheless, we always said 'hi' when we passed in the halls.
Dani had gone upstairs and her mom had followed. Jane was probably telling her everything. Greg went out to get dinner I guess, he kind of disappeared.
I looked over at Juliette to find her looking back at me. She quickly turned away. This was going to be a long night.
