I woke with a jolt, clutching my heart in a futile attempt to slow the rapid beats that filled me with a looming dread and an unsatisfied  need to run away from some unknown danger.

I don't even know what I saw in that dream. I walked outside to get a split-second view of walkers all over the courtyard of the school, with some feasting on the dead bodies of my friends and family, when a blinding white light took my vision and petrified me into waking.

What a weird, yet startlingly realistic dream.

I was sweating profusely. I realized I really needed a shower, so I lazily got out of bed and sauntered to the wardrobe.

The wardrobe was an amazing piece. Floral carvings were decorating the front of the dark brown oak wood, while on the side carvings of deer stood nobly over wide valleys while snowy peaked mountains overlooked them.

I reached for a towel on the top shelf when it slipped out and the contents fell on top of me. I groaned. I really didnt need this today.

The clattering of the shelf falling to the floor attracted the attention of Carol, who was walking past my room to the bathroom. She giggled at my misfortune and I glared daggers at her. She rubbed her face and laughed as she walked over to me.

'Come on, let's get you out of this mess.' she sighed, a grin prominent on her face.

Once all the towels had been neatly folded and the shelf fixed firmly back into place, did me and Carol sit on my unnade bed. She quickly stood up and began making the bed while I looked at her in confusion.

'Carol, what are you doing? You don't need to do that. Nobody else is in here.' I questioned.

She blushed. ' Sorry, nervous habit.'

I frowned, confused and looked at her questioningly.

She sighed and sat, taking my hands in hers.

'Monsters have been around forever, they are not new and this 'apocalypse' didn't bring them into being.' With that, she dropped my hands. I tried to comprehend what she had just said. My mouth closed when I realized that I agreed with her. I had personally had my own share on monsters before the world fell.

Carol brushed the stray hairs out from my eyes and leant in to kiss my forehead. She got up and left the room.

I stared into space for a minute before my gaze drifted to the discarded towel left on the floor. I sighed. Then a thought overcame me. Has the world even changed that much?
