Hermione paces around the house. She is itching to go out and find Severus, but she can't leave her kids alone.
Her beaded purse has come in handy yet again. She always has a few extra change of clothes for her family in case they need them. The dress she was wearing was thrown unceremoniously in the corner of her room.
It's nearly one in the morning and Hermione has started pacing in the kitchen.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Rose asks from the doorway. She's had trouble sleeping all night.
"Yes Rose, I'm fine," Hermione stops. She smiles weakly at her daughter. She needs to be strong, for Rose and Hugo. It's just getting so hard to do when so many scenarios are going through her head.
"Do you think daddy will be okay?" Rose goes and hugs Hermione.
"Of course," Hermione chokes out. "You father is a tough man." Then the tear ducts break. Hermione sobs and falls to her knees. "I'm trying to be strong," Hermione buries her face in her hands.
"It's okay to cry, mom." Rose wraps her arms around Hermione. She has tears coming down her face as well. "Even the bravest cry." Rose crawls into Hermione's lap. They sit like that, crying together. It seems like hours before Hermione stops crying. Rose has fallen asleep, tear tracts on her face.
"You dad will come back to us," Hermione sniffs. She wipes her face and stands to carry Rose to bed.
She sets her down on the bed next to Hugo. Then Hermione takes a seat on her own bed. She knows she won't be able to get any sleep, but sitting here watching her kids comforts her.
Soon the sun starts rising in the sky and the children start to stir.
"Morning, mommy," Hugo yawns.
"Morning dear, I believe I heard aunt Luna starting breakfast downstairs." Hermione tries to smile.
"Are you okay?" Hugo tilts his head. "How come Rose is here, but dad isn't?" He asks. He was asleep when Hermione got here last night. So he has no clue as to what went down. Rose sits up and looks at Hermione.
"Just go help aunt Luna, we'll talk later." Hermione kisses his forehead. His eyes and black hair stab Hermione in the heart. He reminds her of Severus so much.
"Okay mom," he smiles and skips out of the room. Rose follows after him. Hermione wipes her eyes angrily. She needs to stop crying. Severus is not dead, so she needs to stop acting like it.
She composes herself and stalks out of the room. She passes Draco's room.
"What if they come and get us here?" Lily's soft voice asks.
"They won't, dad said this place is super safe." James reassures her.
"Yeah, papa said there's strong magic protecting it." Scorpius chimes in.
Hermione quickly passes. Hogwarts was supposed to be safe too, but now Severus is missing. Hermione quietly goes down the stairs. Just as she's about to go in the kitchen, the front door opens.
Harry steps in.
"Any news?" Hermione immediately rounds on him.
"I, um," he clears his throat. "We searched the grounds thoroughly, and we found this," Harry pulls a black wand from his coat pocket.
"No," Hermione takes it from him. It's Snape's wand, there is no mistaking it.
"And, a dark mark was sent to the sky, using that wand." Harry murmurs low.
"Snape wouldn't have done that!" Hermione snaps.
"I'm not saying he did, I'm just saying his wand was used to conjure a dark mark." Harry says hurriedly.
"We've interrogated some of the people we've apprehended. Apparently there is someone rising up, trying to call the death eaters back together. They were trying to-" Harry stops.
"Trying to what?" Hermione snaps.
"Trying to punish those who turned their back on Voldemort," Harry finishes.
"Severus," Hermione gasps.
"Yes, that's why they went after Lucius and tried going after Draco." Harry nods.
Hermione grabs her cloak from the pegs by the door.
"What are you doing?" Harry asks.
"I'm not just going to sit here while my husband is out there. Merlin knows what they're doing to him." She sniffs. She gently puts Snape's wand in her bag.
"What about your children?" Harry stands in front of the door.
"My parents are here, they'll be fine." Hermione fights the tears threatening to spill.
"Now, I can either go with you, or I'm going on my own." She stares Harry down.
"You aren't a properly trained auror," Harry tries to weakly argue.
"Harry, we spent our seventh year on the run and fighting death eaters, I think I'll be fine." She pushes past him and reaches for the door knob.
"Fine, but as soon as it gets too dangerous for you, I'm sending you home." Harry pulls the door open and they step out. He grabs her arm and they apparate away.
Hermione hopes beyond anything that they save Severus before anything too terrible happens. She couldn't imagine her life without him. Not to mention how their kids would be affected.
No she can't think about this, she needs to focus on saving Severus.
