Chapter Two
Running towards my next class, I spot Rut making out with Kindsey against the staircase.
I sigh. He must not be doing well today. I know it has something to do with what he was going to tell me in the car. Oh well, I’ll get it out of him later.
I run up to them, ready to interrupt their make out session. Rut and I have BioMed next, and if we’re late—again—we’ll get detentions. And I’ve already covered what happens if I’m late. By the time I’m a few feet away, Rut pulls away from her and looks at me. I motion for him to hurry up, and give him a come on, stupid head look. He fully pushes Kindsey away, and walks to me without saying anything to her. She pouts, but turns to go somewhere else, which I’m pretty happy about. Last time she tried to tag along, I almost punched her artificially sculpted nose in.
“Hey,” Rut says all nonchalant, as if he wasn’t just making out with Kindsey because he’s being torn apart on the inside. The calm demeanor is useless, though, I know all his tricks.
“Rutty, dear, you don’t want to catch an STD, now do you?” I don’t wait for him to respond. “Of course you don’t! So stay away from those trashy—“
“Dizzy, calm down. I’ll tell you later, okay?” With that, he walked away. He knows the only way to calm me down when he takes his ‘Extremely Idiotic Homemade Remedies”, as I like to call them, is for him to tell me what’s wrong, so I can help.
When I got to the BioMed room, Rut was already sitting at our table. People were surrounding it, like it usually was when I walked in. Rut was popular by default. His mother’s family has lived in Coalwood, Michigan for decades, and had acquired a small fortune in that time. His father is a successful lawyer, and hopes for Rut to follow in his footsteps one day. Rut’s family is obviously one of the richest families in Coalwood, with who his parents are. So naturally, like every other rich kid on earth, he’s good looking. Rut mostly takes after his father’s side, getting the dark-almost-black eyes, tan complexion and tall, fit frame from him. He has his mother’s black hair, though. Personality wise, Rut isn’t like either of his parents. Frequently in the public eye, Rut’s parents are both charismatic and charming. Rut is the exact opposite, and an ‘embarrassment’, according to his mother, so they stopped taking him to dinners and whatnots with them, which is exactly what he wanted.
Rut motioned for the girl sitting in my chair next to his to move. She did, but not without touching his shoulder first and sending him a flirty smile. Rut was a known player at the school, and girls liked to take advantage of it. He didn’t go off with girls for fun, though. It was one of his Extremely Idiotic Homemade Remedies. I sat down in my seat, and most of the people around the table took their seats. I was kind of popular by association—Rut’s popular, and I’m his bestie, so that makes me somewhat popular, too. You would never catch the other popular kids Rut hangs around with talking to me without him, though. The basically just know my name and my status to Rut. We both had our separate groups in school. Rut was obviously part of the in crowd, and I was not. Rut had told me before that the others in his posse think I’m weird, and that I’m only using him for his money. He usually just brushes off those remarks, though, because we both know it’s not true. Sure, I may be a little on the odd side (I called it creative), but I definitely didn’t use Rut for his family’s wealth. My family isn’t super rich, but we’re doing fine as a middle class family of seven. Three of my older brothers are away at college, and I have a job waitressing at a local restaurant. My parents are both local college professors, which comes in handy when I need help with homework.
The teacher came into the room, wheeling in a cart with frogs on it. Oh shit, I thought. Dissection day.
I only decided to take BioMed because Rut wanted to. It’s our senior year of high school, so we wanted to take as many classes as we could together before we both had to go away to college. Rut would probably leave for some fancy, expensive school to study law, and I would either go to my parent’s university or travel the world. I haven’t decided yet.
