Prologue Part 1

ALICIA'S POV

I started to swim faster, pedaling with all my might. I knew that if I didn’t hurry he would catch up to me. I kicked and pedaled as fast as my arms and legs could go. It wasn’t long before I felt his arm grab my leg and pull me towards him.

“And you thought I wouldn’t catch up to you,” my best friend, Liam Payne said as he wrapped his arms around my shoulders.

I laughed, no matter how fast I swam he always caught up to me because of his height. “You’re so mean Liam! Why can’t you let me beat you just once?”

I turned around and put my hands on his shoulders and wrapped my legs around his waist. He brushed some of my black strands out of my face and said, “Because then it wouldn’t be as fun teasing you about it later.” He pushed me off of him and quickly swam away back to shore.

I cursed at him good-heartedly and started after him. It was days of the summer like this that I was glad that Liam was my best friend.

LIAM'S POV

She would get me back for that one day. As soon as she got out of the water and squeezed the water out of her hair, she tackled me into the sand and rubbed the sand into my hair until I was practically eating the sand.

It’s funny how this girl in front of me is my best friend. We’ve been close since kindergarten. We were paired up to sing Old McDonald in front of the class. Of all things Ms. Waters had to assign, it was that song. It brought us together. Our love for singing was just the start. Turns out we had a lot in common.

Alicia was there at every track meet I had, every gold trophy I won, and now every singing competition I enter. We were both currently on X-Factor.

She sat across from me and laughed her super cute laugh as I told her a joke about Simon, one of the judges on the show. Her smile was contagious; it always has been since we met.

“Liam, you better stop making jokes about him or he won’t vote for you,” she said in between her fits of laughter.

I smirked at her, “It’s not like he can hear me.”

Her face turned serious before she said, “You never know, there could be a hidden camera around here. You know how the paparazzi can get in the celebrity world.”

We both stared at each other then started cracking up laughing again. “Yeah like that’s ever going to happen. I’ll never become that famous.”

She laughed harder, “Uh huh, yeah right. We’ll both be stars just watch.”

I stood up and rolled my eyes. There’s no way a couple of small town teenagers make it big in the celebrity world. The chances are too slim. “Come on, let’s go.”

ALICIA'S POV

I started thinking, what if he did become famous and I didn’t? Or if I became famous and he didn’t? I know that things would change. I had to make sure that things wouldn’t.

“Hey Liam?” I said hesitantly, unsure of the way to go with this.

“Yeah?” he glanced at me before returning his gaze to the road in front of him.

I decided the best way to go would be just to come out with it, “Promise me that no matter what happens, fame will never come in the way of this friendship. That no matter who becomes famous we’ll never stop being close like we are now.”

He looked at me full on and said, “Alicia…nothing is going to get in the way of us. Especially not fame or fortune. I promise you that you will always come first in my life. We’ve been best friends since kindergarten, nothing will come before that.”

I smiled when he grabbed my hand and turned his attention back to the road again. I fully believed what he said.
