The Untold Story of Athens and Sparta

Song Based Off Of: "Dear Theodosia

He looked across the mountains, knowing she stood proud and tall on Attica, her Parthenon a beacon for ages to come. Looking down at the paper in his hand, he grimaced. Writing was hard. But somehow, he'd managed the words he needed to come out on the paper. He sealed the letter and pierced an arrow through the crisp parchment. With one mighty snap, the arrow sprang free from the bow, sailing across the land. He watched it blow through the wind until he couldn't see his signature on the outside anymore. Until he couldn't see Sparta.

The paper landed on her hill with a soft thump. She picked it up, turning it so she could see the crudely carved name on the back; Sparta. Her heart softened and she looked out, across the land, wishing she could see him in his mighty valley. She opened the letter.

Dear Golden Athens what to say to you,

your hill is high, your Parthenon is good

When you faced at marathon you won, and it made me cry

They thought you weren't all that good

You proved them wrong Darius had to run

When you cheered, you smiled at me I fell part

And I thought I was so strong

You'll come of age and lead a nation

I'll bleed and fight for you

I'll keep it safe for you

Together we'll lay a strong enough foundation

It started out as two, we'll pass it on as one

Yeah you blew us all away

Athens Athens

You can blow us all away

Athens Athens

She smiled against the tear that slipped down her cheek and took a fresh paper. She wrote. The words came easily, each letter like a mini painting, curved and dark, filled out with ink and meaning. She finished the letter with her flourish of a signature; Athens. She picked up an arrow with trepidation. Weapons had never been her forte. But she clipped it to the letter and pulled on the snappy wire as hard as she could. She let the arrow fly. She prayed it would reach him.

He heard the arrow land, a few miles away. He went out looking for it and when he did it was hard not to cry. There at the bottom of the letter was her elegant signature; Athens. His eyes flipped to the top of the paper. It took time, but he slowly read her musical words.

Oh....Sparta when you smile I am undone, my love

Look at me love. Strength is not the word I'm looking for

You are more than you seemed then

Oh...Sparta you are fierce and can't be beat, not by me

You knock me out I fall apart,

and I thought I was so smart

Your fighters aren't around

His lips formed an echo to her words. "Your people aren't around"

I swear that I'll be around for you

I'll do whatever it takes

"I'll be there when you awake"

I'll make the world safe and sound for you...

You'll win a war of fighting Persians

I'll lead the league for you

I'll make it heal for you

Words came on his tongue and he looked across land, knowing in his heart that she was looking too, and the same words were coming to her.

"When you come of age and face the changes

I'll try to speak for you

I'll keep it neat for you

And you'll blow us all away

Someday, someday

Yeah you'll blow us all away

someday, someday"

I know this is kind of random, but we're studying Athens and Sparta in school and I was just thinking; 'you know, there's so much rivalry going on here. What if Sparta and Athens weren't actually enemies? What if something else caused Sparta to fall? What if the Persians defeated the Spartans and out of pure anger and revenge the Athenians defeated the Persians?' I know, the words I wrote in don't match that story, but still. Why does there always have to be enemies in history? Why not, for once, there's some love there?

Anyway, this sprang up from that. Assisted by the song "Dear Theodosia" written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, from the musical "Hamilton" and sung by Leslie Odom Jr. and Lin-Manuel Miranda. I haven't seen "Hamilton" but I LOVE all the songs, so I really hope to get the chance. (You can hear "Dear Theodosia" up top)

So that's that. I hope you enjoyed this!
