However that means awkward family gatherings where everyone suddenly wants to talk to you.

This is how Christmas in a British west Indies household goes.
Parent: Y u never socialize with family.
Me: socialized with family.
Me: gets insulted by family.
Me: goes straight back to the kind loving internet.
