Chapter Five
The sky was dark but was beginning to lighten up along the horizon as the taxi cruised past the familiar factories. I settled into my seat and let the colours blur together before my eyes as they drifted closed. But I sat bolt upright, my eyes wide open, as we passed the factory that haunts me in my sleep.
"STOP!" my mouth screamed without permission.
The car veered and stopped abruptly against the footpath.
"What the..." the driver began.
"Wait here" I said as I threw open the door and bolted towards the warehouse. If I was ever going to sleep again, I had to prove myself wrong.
I pressed my ear up against the door but could not hear anything so I continued on inside. It was an exact replica of my nightmare; there was nothing but a dark corridor, with a couple of closed doors on either side and another right at the end. I stalked towards the one at the end, knowing that behind it lay the room of my night terrors. As I passed the other doors along the side of the hallway I shook each door handle to find them all locked. The clicking of my shoes and rattling of the handles reverberated off the walls of the dark corridor. I reached the final door and reached out for the handle and paused, listening for any sign of life. When no sound reached my ears, my quickening heart rate slowed slightly, so I grabbed the handle and twisted. It rotated easily and soundlessly, the door swinging open the same way. Before me, was complete darkness; not even a crack of light could be seen from anywhere.
I fumbled for the light switch, running my hands across the chipped paint on the wall which crumbled into my fingers until my palm hit the smooth surface of the switch. The lights flickered blindingly before settling into a dull glow, which illuminated the blatantly empty room. The pale brown and white textured linoleum that covered the floor had a thick layer of dust and grime over it, and the walls that would have once been white, were now a dirty, cream colour, with rusted iron showing from underneath the flaking paint. There was nothing in this room to be afraid of (except maybe some nasty bacteria).
A gush of carbon dioxide left me as I let out the breath I hadn't realised I was holding.
I was wrong. I thought gladly.
I left the factory with my head held high and all negative thoughts banished from my head. My body settled back into the taxi happily, waiting to collapse into my comfortable mattress with my head buried in my pillow, completely oblivious to the nagging at the back of my head that I had missed something, something important.
