Chapter 5:
I woke up early the next morning. This was the first time I was ever up this early. It was nearly 7 o'clock. I sat up in my bed and thought about last night's events. Everything seemed a bit surreal, but I knew that it was how things really were. I decided to get up and take a shower.
I finished showering and getting dressed by 7:30.
"It's still early." I thought to myself as I headed towards the mirror starting on my make-up. I then went downstairs and found mom in the kitchen making breakfast, but not the usual, I mean "normal" way. She was snapping her fingers around, mumbling some words (spells I suppose), that I couldn't understand. Pots and pans were moving all by themselves. In less than 5 minutes breakfast was ready.
"Cool!" I shrieked as I took place in the seat next to my mom.
"It's not that cool anymore when you get used to it" She smiled at me. "So, will you be seeing Alex today?" She asked curiously.
"Yeah, he is technically in all my classes" I said without paying attention to what she really meant. "Oh! You mean that way? I don't know mom. There's something really suspicious about him and the guys, Especially him."
"Why don't you ask him to explain what's going on?" She asked
"He said that I had to find out for myself, and that I would know very soon. Weird"
I told her everything that had happened yesterday. When I was finished, she just sat and though about it a bit and then said:
"Hmm...." She sighed. She got up from her chair, went towards the cabinet above the sink, took a weird looking bottle and handed it to me. "Here. If you drink this then you'll be able to see inside a person's mind. You will find out the truth, but you have to use it carefully. You must not let them know what you're doing. They could very likely be vampires."
"Vampires? Like me? But how?" I almost yelled, but then it all somehow made sense.
"Well, that Rick you told me about seemed to have been listening to your thoughts. How else could he have known what you were thinking. I mean, with your vampire powers active, you would most likely be able to do the same. But it's not all vampires that can do that."
"I see." I said thinking about the matter. "You're probably right... Mom? Do you think that they know I'm half vampire?"
"How would they know that?" She started to panick. "They wouldn't know if the potion I gave you worked properly. They wouldn't be able to tell. But yet, maybe... Maybe that's how your father always finds us every time we stay for too long in one place. God! Why haven't I thought of that before?"
"What are you saying mom. What is it that you haven't thought about?"
"I can cast a spell to protect the house, but only a very powerfull or more than one witch can cast it properly. I'll have to teach you first" She said thoughtfully. She then turned to me, smiled and said.
"We may never have to move again if this works, hun."
"Really? Do you mean it? Good! I was getting tired of moving around anyway! So, when do we start my training?" I asked hopefully.
"Well, we could begin after you come home from school, but first you have to find out what's going on at your school. It's already 8:30! Time to go to school!" I went upstairs grabbed my backpack and went out to the car, while my mom was starting it.
"Remember, you have to drink this right before you step out of the car. It makes you a bit dizzy at first but it wears off after 2 minutes. It'll work all day. You just have to focus on the person whom's thoughts you want to hear and it'll work."
"Do I have to look at the person or just think about him"
"You just have to focus your mind on him that's all" She smiled at me.
It didn't take long before we reached the school. I could see Alex waiting for me at the gate.
"Okay. Drink it now before he sees you!" She urged me.
I opened the bottle and poured the content into my mouth. It tasted like a mixture of blackpepper and liquorice. Nasty! Then I felt my mouth dry out and my vision getting a bit blurry. It only took about a minute before the symptoms wore off. This was a strange feeling. I could hear almost everything, including my mom's thoughts. "I hope it works. If they really are vampires, then I don't know if they're out for us or not."
"Don't worry mom. Everything will be alright." I assured her with a smile.
"I'll pick you up later. okey?" She smiled back.
"Kay. Don't forget me!" I grinned at her. I got out and walked towards the school gates and Alex.
"Hey!" I said
"Hey. Come on. The guys are waiting for us!" He yelled at pulled me with him.
"But what about class?" I asked as I was almost running to keep up with him.
"Don't worry about that. You won't be in any trouble. I promise." He smiled
Why was he suddenly being so nice and friendly? This seemed odd. He was supposed to be the bad boy! I tried to focus my mind on his thoughts and it worked easier than I thought it would. I could clearly hear them as if they were flowing from his mind and into mine.
"I must admit that she looks really cute. Wait! What am I thinking? She's probably wondering why I'm so nice to her all of a sudden. Well, the damage is done. There's no use of going back to my old behaviour now. Soon, she will find out the truth and she'll maybe never want anything to do with me again. *sigh* I've never felt like this for a human before."
"Human?" I thought for myself. He doesn't know that I'm half vampire. Thank God! But that means that he isn't a human either! I have to know more about this before jumping to conclusions.
We reached the door to the "hang-out" as I liked to call it and went inside.
"We're here!" Alex yelled out to the guys.
"Hey there! How's it going today?"Rick asked with a smile.
"Hello! I'm fine. What about you?" I smiled back. I could feel him trying to read my thoughts, but I blocked him out. So they're really vampires. I was sure of it now, but I seemed so calm about it.
"Hey Julie!" Will screamed at me, came over and gave me a hug.
"Hey." I smiled at her, hugging her back.
"Rayne and David are out to get us some food for later" Will said as if she saw me looking around for them.
"Okay. So what are we going to do today?" I asked a bit excited.
"Well, I thought that we could maybe read a book and just hang around like yesterday." Rick said a bit unsure.
"Sounds okay to me" I said.I found a rather interesting looking book about vampires and decided to read it. Then we all went to sit on the couch. None of us spoke while we were reading, I couldn't seem to keep concentrating on the book, so I decided to try and get to listen to Rick's thoughts but it was harder than I thought, After several attemps it finally worked:
"This is odd. I couldn't listen to her thoughts. There's something unusual about her today. What if she knows what we are? Would she accept to have vampires for friends? I don't know. I have to speak to the guys about this."
Bingo! Now I was 100 percent sure that they were vampires. They didn't seem evil at all! I could get used to this. What would happen next?
