I grew up in a small town in the heart of South Carolina. I was about five years old and was starting my first day of 5k. I remember this very clearly I still have flashbacks about it sometimes and it was a good memory, a very good one.
I was playing with some building blocks because I didn't want to play with dolls, with all of the stupid little girls. Even though I was a girl, I hated anything girly. But anyways back to the story. I was playing with the building blocks and I saw these two boys making fun of this little black boy. I didn't understand why and I felt bad and wanted to help him.
I got up from what I was doing and walked over to the three boys I looked at the two boys who were bothering the black boy and said,"What did he do to you?" They looked at me and said,"Because he's different." I didn't understand what they meant and I was angry at them for being mean to him. I said,"Can you leave him alone?" One of the little boys said ,"No."
That pissed me off real bad. I got between the two boys and the black boy and said,"If you don't leave him alone I'm gonna kick your white ass!!!!" I know that was quite the fraise for a five year old to say but I said it, I was a freaking savage and I was only five.
I looked over at the black boy and said,"Are you ok??" He wiped away the tears in his eyes and said,"Thanks."
I held out my hand and he shook it. I said, " I'm Jane. What's your name??" He smiled at me and looked into my bright green eyes as he said,"Malcolm." After that, the rest was history. We were inseparable and I don't care what anyone had to say that boy was my best friend and he would always be that no matter what. That was what we promised each other.
