Chapter 2:
To say I was surprised when this person landed on top of Cole, apparently from nowhere, would be an understatement. Surprise in when you bit into a jam doughnut and discover it to be chocolate. This went way beyond surprise. I let out a piercing scream and leapt backwards, tripped over my flip-flop and went flying. I landed on my backside in an ungainly heap.
By the time I had flailed about for a few moments and disengaged myself from the mud and the leaves, the stranger had rolled off Cole and was lying face down on the ground. Cole was sprawled on his back, unmoving. I approached cautiously.
“Please don’t be dead,” I whispered. “Both of you. Please, please, please be alive and well.”
Cole was nearest, so I bent down and put my ear next to his face. He appeared to be breathing, so I gingerly pressed my fingers against his throat. At first I could feel nothing and my stomach froze with fear, but a few seconds later I felt his pulse. His heart was beating strongly. I gave him a quick look over, and since there wasn’t any apparent blood or broken bones, I decided he was fine. Or at least that he could wait until I had checked out the newcomer.
I knelt down by him and gently pushed my fingers into the skin of his throat. I found his pulse immediately, strong and regular just beneath his skin. My eyes travelled up and down his body more times than was necessary to check for signs of injury. There were none, thank goodness. It would have been a tragedy to damage a body such as the one currently stretched out in front of me. It was mightily fine, let me tell you that.
The back of his head was rather attractive as well, covered as it was by brown hair, but I rather wanted to see his face. Would it be alright to roll over onto his back? Probably not. He had just fallen out of – Where had he come from actually? The trees? The skies? A parachuting expedition gone wrong maybe? It didn’t matter. Wherever he had come from, it would not be a good idea to move him.
I gave him a gentle poke in the side to see if anything would happen. I think he twitched slightly but it might have been my imagination. I sat back on my heels and wondered what to do. Should I call an ambulance or something? I didn’t have a phone and the park was entirely devoid of phoneboxs. Not that I would have known how to use one. Come on, phoneboxs are like from last century.
I glanced over at Cole. Maybe he had his mobile.
I shuffled over to where Cole was lying and, grimacing, ran my hand over his hip on either side, trying to locate his phone. It wasn’t there so I transferred my hand to his jacket. I was in the middle of pulling the latest swanky smartphone from his jacket pocket when a groan and the sound of movement made me spin around. The stranger was awake.
“Ouch,” he remarked as he hauled himself to a sitting position. My breath caught in my throat as I caught sight of his face. Even bruised and dirty as he was, he was staggeringly gorgeous, with eyes as blue as the Mediterranean.
“Are you alright?” I breathed, dragging my mind back from the very naughty paths it has just disappeared down. The things you could do with that mouth...
“I think so.” He rolled his shoulders and winced. “It was a long fall.”
“Really?” I said stupidly.
“Yeah.” He nodded, eyes wide open. He stood up and stretched, brushed himself down and then came over to where I was crouching next to Cole.
“Is he alright?” he asked, nudging Cole with his toe. He was barefoot, I noticed, and he had the most attractive feet I had ever seen.
