Chapter 10:

I awoke with the sun shining weakly on my face. I threw up an arm to cover my eyes and rolled over, sand rolling under my feet. I opened my eyes and sat up, my heart skipping a beat when I saw where I was. The sand stretched out around me, and the ocean roared to shore not so far away. If it was possible, I was even more surprised than I had been the night before. It was real! It hadn’t just been some very elaborate dream.

I glanced to my right and saw Lorris sprawled out on his stomach, his head resting on his arms. His hair was full of sand and all mussed up from sleep, but still he looked gorgeous. He certainly didn’t snore or dribble when he slept.

“You’re revolting,” I told him. “Couldn’t you at least sleep with your mouth open?”

He didn’t reply, just grunted and shifted. I stood up and tried to brush of the worst of the sand. I was still only wearing my bikini and I wrapped the blanket tightly around myself. It was still very early, and the air was quite chilly, especially with the breeze coming off the sea.

I walked down to where the water was lapping the shore and stood on the very edge, so only my toes were touched by the next wave. I pinched myself to check yet again that this wasn’t my imagination, but how could I have created all this is such detail?

I turned around slowly, arms flung out wide, and let the wind play through my fingers. I flew such exhilaration, such excitement I could have screamed. Yelled at the top of my voice so the whole world knew how I felt. So the universe knew what was going on inside my head right now. So all these feelings could be shared with everyone.

I didn’t scream. That would’ve woken up Lorris, and when a guy whisks you off to France for a romantic picnic, you can at least let him sleep. I returned to our makeshift camp and flopped down on the blanket, happy just to look at him for a while. After only a couple of minutes however, his eyelids fluttered and opened, and he stared straight at me. A small smile creased his lips.

“Enjoying the view?” he muttered.

“A bit.” I shrugged. “I’ve seen better.”

“No you haven’t.” He grabbed me and pulled me down so he was looming above me. he kissed the tip of my nose.

“You’re sure of that, are you?”

“Absolutely. I am an angel after all. No mere mortal can compare to me.”

“And what about other angels?”

“Maybe, but you’ve never seen any, have you?”

I was about to say I might have, but Lorris shushed me. He had suddenly gone rigid, and he was no longer looking at me.

“What’s going on?” I sat up and looked around to see what had caused the sudden transformation.

“It’s time to go home. Your parents will be worrying.” He stood up and gestured for me to do the same. I scanned the length of the beach in a hope of seeing what was upsetting him. The beach was empty apart from us, and there was nothing to cause alarm. Perhaps he was picking up something with his magical angel senses.

“Lorris,” I started to say, but he interrupted.

“Not now,” he hissed, and grabbed my arm. Just before the flash of white light, I thought I saw a figure over Lorris’ shoulder, standing on top of the short incline that bordered one side of the beach. The next instant, the beach had dissolved and we were standing in my bedroom. Lorris let go on me abruptly and I stumbled backwards.
