Chapter 1:

First Impressions and and a Visit Back Home

"Who wants gray eyes?" I ask as I finish plucking my right eyebrow, "they're so unnatural. And everyone stares at you-it's just weird."

"Tara, you're eyes are gorgeous," Sadie replies in a sharp tone as she slips a floral dress over her shoulders.

I shake my head in denial, setting the tweezers down.

Today, there's a big event going on at Della-Moore Church-more commonly known as DMC. Our fathers are both pastors, and they're presenting a new project to helps kids in Thailand or something. Honestly, I don't really know what it was about-nor do I care. I just take it as a chance to hang out with Sadie. We would be handing out pamphlets to anyone arriving in the beginning of the presentation, helping serve lunch at intermission, and hand out complementary pencils and notepads at the end. Any space not filled by work, we would hang out in the Junior-Senior Room with the church band and some scattered kids who volunteered to sign up so a percentage of any money donated would go to their camp fund.

"Where'd you say Kara was, again?" Sadie inquires as I gently yank my baby blue dress on.

"With Oliver in Del Vino. Some informational thing about Cornell." I sigh. Kara is my hard-working, over-exuberant, optimistic, fraternal twin. She's everything I'm not.

Kara has the perfect boyfriend: Oliver Graham. He is a football legend, straight-A student, religious, had a healthy social life, and is extremely gorgeous. He has that whole California surfer-dude look about him. The one with the blonde hair and sun-kissed skin, perfect abs, and hazel eyes.

And Kara is a perfect match for him. She was not only student body president in high school, but a straight-A student and cheerleader who seemed to be everybody's best friend. Plus, she's also gorgeous. Though we were twins, she got the better side of the gene pool.

But I digress. She is perfect Kara, and I am clumsy Tara. Plain and simple as that. Sadie seemed the only person on the Earth, though, who seemed to like me better than Kara. And for that, I have been eternally grateful.

"Girls, are you almost ready?" My mom asks, suddenly appearing at the door.

"Yeah, Mom, we'll be down in just a minute." I answer, brushing out my snarls of hair.

"I'll hold you to that," She warns, with a smile on her face. As she continues down the hallway, I can hear her yelling my little sister's name.

"Tara, does my bun look okay?" Sadie asks. I turn around, and affirm. Her dark hair is pulled back into a sock bun at the top of her neck, and a curly tendril of hair hangs from each side of her face and curls up to hug her pale cheeks.

We both head downstairs, where my 21-year-old brother, Liam, is playing Xbox with my other brother Daniel. Though Daniel's 7 years younger, he still seems to be beating Liam by a lot on Call of Duty.

"Wow, it's almost 8, and you're already up on a Saturday. I'm impressed," I address the boys. Liam looks up and smirks at me, then pauses the game.

"And look at you, wearing a dress. Got to say, I'm surprised." Liam responds, pulling me into a bear hug. I squeeze my big brother back tightly. He'd been away at Arizona State for the last two years, visiting for holidays, birthdays, vacations, and the occasional weekend. Arizona State had 3 choices for summer break, and he'd chosen the longest break, getting him out of school in late May. He packed up as soon as classes ended, and evidently Liam felt obliged to come down Friday night instead of later this afternoon as he'd originally planned. He claimed it was because Stephanie's birthday Monday, but I think he just missed us.
