Why Bother Anymore? {Part 1}

Chapter 1

Maya P.O.V

I wanted to quickly grabbed my books from my locker, and run into class without anyone noticing me. But, as soon as I opened my locker some notes fell out. 

Some said: Broken. You have no Life. Poor. You have no friends anymore. 

The words always sting me. I get these kind of notes just about everyday but, that doesn't mean they sting any less.

I sighed as I walked into my history class. Mr. Matthews teaches the class. His daughter, Riley and I used to be best friends. We were unbreakable. Then one summer right when she came back from Philadelphia, from visiting her grandparents, she started drifting from me. She never invited me over or even hardly talked to me anymore. She then started to hate me. She started making friends with Missy. I don't know what I did but, I guess she didn't like me anymore.

Same with Farkle and Lucas. Ever since Riley stopped they stopped too but, they had no reason to. So that leaves me where I am right now.

As soon as I walked into class everyone looked at me like usual. I've gotten used to people ignoring me a lot so it doesn't bother me anymore.

I took my seat and waited for Mr.Matthews to give the assignment already so I could just leave this class.

"So class," Mr. Matthews began, "you have been assigned an assignment about the Civil War. It's like the country was like a family but, one side decided to be against the other side and basically it's like they're sisters and never spoke to each other again. Then the whole family followed along. Family's aren't supposed to do that. They are supposed to be by each other's side."

Huh. That's what Riley, Farkle, Lucas, and I were. A family. Riley and I were sisters. But, they're like one side and I'm like the other. I'm lonely.

"So you're going to partner up and describe why a Civil War is like a family divided," Mr. Matthews finished saying.

I just waited to hear the groan from someone when they got me as a partner.

"Sarah and Darby"

"Riley and Farkle"

Riley and Lucas ended their 'unofficial' thing in the summer going into 10th grade.

When Riley unfriended me.

"Maya and Lucas"

My heart stopped. Why Lucas? Why couldn't I just have this kid that just tells me to put his name on the assignment so he didn't have to do anything. Hopefully Lucas wants me to do that so, I don't have work with him or be by him. He obviously doesn't want to be by me.

" I think that's everybody," Mr. Matthews said, "Remember this project is due in 3 weeks"

Then the bell rang

Then I saw Lucas come up to me.

Before I knew what he was going to say, I just started talking so he couldn't get a word in.

"I'll just put your name on it if you want, you don't have to be by me and embarrass yourself in front of your friends when they see you with me."

"No I actually want to do this project," he said, "want to come to come to my house tomorrow?"

"I guess" I said trying not to make eye contact.

"Good" he said. 

"Well bye" I then left.

This is going to be a long 3 weeks.
