It was heart shattering, it made the war realistic. Many people miss the point of his death, that there wasn't one. It bothers me when people say a different Weasley should have died. So how about Molly? Or Arthur? George? Ron? GINNY? It was war. Things don't always happen for a reason and people who die don't always deserve to.
