Chapter Two

Asteria’s POV

I wandered aimlessly around the always-crowded streets. It was the Prince’s birthday so of course there were celebration parties everywhere. There were even more of them than usual considering it was his eighteenth birthday – he was now officially an adult and able to take the throne as soon as he married.

Everything in Lucerne was so much different nowadays. I was able to casually stroll down the streets without people hounding me for one thing or another. ‘Oh my mother is sick, would you heal her?’ or ‘my pet rabbit ran away! Could you find him for me?’ It was so much better the people not knowing who I was or at least not believing that Asteria, the enchantress was alive.

Things had even change from when I took Elle only sixteen short years ago. No longer were the punishments so harsh or the rules so tight.

I was old, very old, but the constant changes in the world were always surprising.

Elle’s almost puppy-like devotion to me was flattering. Sure, we didn’t get on a lot of the time, but I could see she always was looking for approval from me. I regretted that I had already set my usual attitude towards her as angry and cruel.

The girl was sweet; I had grown to care for her after being her ‘mother’ for sixteen years. But I couldn’t change the person she knew me as. The bitter personality that Elle constantly saw was the truest me I have ever shown to anybody. I was a bitter person. To most people I was expressionless and to others I was pure evil but I was neither of those. I was just somebody who had seen a lot of horrible things in my long lifetime and it came out in my personality. I couldn’t help it; it wasn’t my fault, it was my brother’s.

No, I chided myself silently. Don’t think about Henry. He was a horrible man.

I shook my head to clear thoughts of my brother and sat down with the crowd. I watched as the royal parade continued down the street, the happy prince waving at the crowd.

Then it hit me… Elle shared a birthday with the Prince. I had forgotten it again.
