Chapter Six
Elle’s POV
Samara’s promise to help me find the diary brought me out of my depressed reverie.
I couldn’t believe I had stooped to such a low where I would make a scene because somebody took something from me. Something that wasn’t even mine to start with!
“Sam,” I said timidly, still sitting on my bed and watching my best friend digging through some old trunks. She lifted her head and met my eye. “I’m sorry.”
Samara smiled empathetically and came over to hug me. “Don’t be sorry, Elle,” she said gently.
I went over to my wardrobe and flung all the clothes out of it, feeling each surface of the inside to see if there was some secret compartment or something.
Next I went over to my dresser, which was lying on the ground from my previous tantrum. I did the same as I did inside my wardrobe, but every surface was as smooth as glass.
“There’s nothing here,” I sighed heavily. “We’re not going to find it.”
“Don’t be so negative,” Samara disregarded with a wave of her hand. She turned back to the trunk and continued digging through all the junk in there.
After a few hours of thoroughly searching ever nook of the tower, Samara and I agreed to give up.
“It really is nowhere,” Samara frowned grumpily. “I was really hoping it would be.”
Despite out lack of luck in finding the diary, I considered myself extremely lucky to have Samara. She was the best friend anyone could ever ask for.
“Are you sure we’ve looked everywhere?” Samara asked. I saw her eyes scan over an antique box and then they lit up. “Hey! We never looked in that box!”
“I don’t think that’s a great idea,” I said, placing a hand on her arm to stop her from going to investigate. I didn’t even know why I stopped her. I just wanted to keep the box mine and only mine.
“What’s in it anyway?” Samara asked curiously.
I sighed and gave in to telling her. “It’s full of the few things my mother has actually given me. A few pieces of jewellery are all that’s in there.”
Sam’s eyes lit up. “Elle! It’s perfect! What better place to hide the diary than the box with the other things she has given you! Oh please, I bet it’s in there!”
I finally gave in. “Alright, but let me look first.”
I slid the key I always kept in the hem of my dress out and twisted it into the keyhole with a shaking hand. The familiar clicking noise echoed through the room and I lifted up the lid.
Inside, lying on the scratched wooden bottom was the few shimmering necklaces Asteria had given me.
I sighed. “Nothing in here apart from the necklaces.” I moved over so Samara could see.
I shut the box anger, but just as I did, Samara let out a yelp of surprise.
“There, just in there,” she stuttered. I lifted the lid back up and she pointed to a hole in the base where something was glimmering. I touched the hole and my fingers caught a piece of red ribbon. I pulled the ribbon and out slipped a tiny key.
Samara squealed in delight. “Yay! A piece of the puzzle solved.”
“Not really,” I pointed out, always the negative one. “It’s just a key. We don’t know what it’s for.”
“Good point,” Sam agreed sadly.
“Samara,” Andorra called, sticking her head into the room. “Time for bed. Miss Elle, shouldn’t you already be asleep?”
Samara left with a wistful glance at the key in my hand and Andorra shut the door gently behind her.
I turned back to the box.
To be honest, I was never interested in what was inside the box. The jewellery didn’t make me swoon at its beauty nor did I feel connected to it in any way. The box on the other hand called me. It was like an invisible string was attached to it and me, reeling me in closer and closer, making me take in the smell of pine and feel the bumpy surface. I wouldn’t have been surprised if Asteria told me the box had belonged to her and that was why I had a connection to it, but Asteria once told me she bought it from a random antique store in the village.
I sighed and shut the box gently, locking it up. I ran the small key through my fingers and wondered what it was for.
So what do you think the key's for? :) Comment and vote pleeeease!!!
