Chapter Eight

I felt coolness on my face, but I couldn’t open my eyes. It was impossible.

“How is she?” I heard Samara ask anxiously.

Andorra sighed. “No better. She’s still completely unconscious.”

But… I couldn’t be unconscious! Was it possible to be unconscious but still aware of your surroundings? Something told me that whatever was wrong with me had nothing to do with my health, but all about Asteria.

“I’m going to have to call Mistress Asteria,” Andorra announced nervously. “Oh she’s going to kill me!”

“Just call her, Mum,” Samara sighed shakily. “Maybe she’ll be able to help in some way.” Andorra must have realised Samaara was close o tears, because I heard her quick footsteps scurry away and a bell chiming.

Asteria had given Andorra that bell when I was very small. She said that if we ever needed for an emergency, we could ring it and she would come. I had no idea how she heard it, though.

Nearly immediately Asteria’s purposeful footsteps entered the tower.

“Mistress,” Andorra said breathlessly. I could imagine how she would be curtseying, anything to lighten her punishment for my ‘sickness’.

“What do you want?” Asteria snapped wearily. “I am a very busy woman, there had better be an emergency.”

I felt breath on my cheek as Asteria bent down over me.

“She is fine,” she finally announced.

“F-fine, Mistress?” Samara stammered. “She’s unconscious!”

Asteria let out a noise of frustration. “Elle is not unconscious. She is listening to every word right now, just unable to open her eyes. When she learns her lesson, she will awaken.”

The door slammed shut, telling me Asteria had left. What sort of mother just shrugged off something like this? Or if my suspicions were correct, what sort of mother would cause something like this to happen to their child, just to teach a lesson.

This was an extremely short and boring chapter, I know. But a lot more exciting things will be happening in the next one (plus it should be heaps longer)
