Chapter Four

xX Story of my life Xx

I sat cross-legged on the ground of my room; dialing as fast as my skinny little fingers would let me. I punched in her number and laid back, waiting for the same familiar ring tone.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea, SpongeBob square-pants, absorbent and yellow . . . “Oh no fair,” I murmured as the song cut out and a familiar sing-song voice took its place.

“Hey Chassy-bear, how goe—”Gabby began, but I cut across her.

“I got the result—”

“Did you get in?”

“In a word, no,”

“Awwh, hon, I know how much this means to you, but it’s only a scholarship, I’m sure if you applied for a normal entrance they will accept you with wide open arms, just like me,”

“Yeah they did,” I replied, not feeling the energy that was undoubtedly pulsing through her body right now. Gabby was the only person I had ever met who could be wide awake at five in the morning and have a strange, messed up urge to suddenly play cricket.

“See, that’s great!” Gabby’s energy sizzled through every wire in my phone, but none of it swept into me. I just couldn’t get excited . . . considering just a few minutes ago, I watched my dream drift from my fingertips.

“Gabe, you know how much it costs per term,” her silence was permission for me to continue. “It’s not about being accepted, it’s more about the not having ten thousand dollars to spend every term just to go to school, it’s kind of a lot of money,”

“It’s not ten thousand, a term,”

“9,941 dollars, point is its still about 9,940 dollars more than I have,”

“It’s only money,” Gabby cut across.

“Yeah, but it’s a lot of money,”

“What about ya parents: I’m sure somehow they’ll have the money. I mean this is your future,”

“I sighed “They don’t have the money. I’ve already asked, believe me, I’ve exercised every single chance I had, it isn’t happening,”

“Well you know the only solution you have then, don’t you?”

“What, sell myself to medical studies, yeah how much do you get for a kidney these days?”

Gabby giggled her traditional, trademark giggle. “No, sweetie, my parents offer still sta—”but before she could form the sentence, I cut across her. I knew exactly where this crazy train was going.

“Never, never, ever,”

“Chase, stop being so stubborn,”

“I’m not being stubborn, but I’m not letting your parents pay for my education,”

“Why not, they have the money and they love you, they think of you as their daughter already,”

“Than what is the point?” Gabby asked.

I bit my tongue, you have no idea how much I wanted to scream out, bellow in frustration. But by some sheer miracle I managed to silence and smother the bit of nastiness that just begged to come out.

“It’s your parent’s money. I can’t and I won’t.”

“I just wish you’d reconsi—”

“Hey, Cassie, come downstairs,” Mum called, poking around the corner of my bedroom before dashing downstairs.

“Hey, look I have to go; Princess Addison has done something brilliant, what a surprise there,” I said shaking my head.
