CHAPTER 4
Marc paced outside the room they had put the two young boys in. He was getting impatient when Sam finally came back around the corner and nodded at him. Eager to get on with things, he turned the door knob and entered the small gray room. Sam followed close behind and soon both of the young men were staring at the children sitting on the floor.
"So, boys, let's get straight to the point, shall we?" Sam said confidently, expecting them not to answer. "We know all about your little... group. We know you have abilities. So I suggest you just cooperate and we can all leave here happy, okay?"
The smaller of the two boys looked up at Sam in bewilderment while the larger one stared at him in disbelief. Marc chuckled to himself. They were giving the usual response.
"How.. how do you... have you been...?" the bigger one stammered, still not quite believing what he had just heard.
"We have our ways. Now I would like you to answer a few questions. First off, I need to know your full names and the full names of everyone in your group." Sam stated, taking a small notepad and a pen out of his pocket.
Now he had the boys' full attention, and Marc became slightly frustrated when the boys gave each other a knowing glance and folded their arms in a sign of refusal. They must be idiots if they think we're going to let this slide! Marc thought. He balled his fists in an attempt to keep himself from beating the information out of the boys as he had done once before when he couldn't control his anger. Suddenly he heard a voice in his mind. Stay calm Marc. Remember, you are strong, you can handle it. Marc silently cursed, he had forgotten about this new kid Derek and his ability to read minds. Get out of my head newbie, I don't want you reading my thoughts all the time, he thought back. When Marc didn't get an answer back he knew he had won.
When he tuned back into the conversation going on with Sam and the children, he saw that the smaller boy had gotten up and was pacing around the room screaming at Sam while they argued. Marc looked over at Sam and noticed his flushed face which meant he didn't want to put up with much more of this. Looking over at the boy, he made a decision and lunged at the boy. He easily lifted him off the ground. The child thrashed in Marc's hold and he thought that maybe if he hit him a few times he would cooperate. However, just as he raised his fist, Marc felt a tingling sensation on his right forearm. The sensation grew into a sharp pain, and he smelled something burning. Marc looked at his arm and discovered that the other boy had set him on fire. The nerve! That boy was not going to go unpunished.
Quickly he dropped the boy in his grasp and ripped off his jacket, dropping it on the floor. He stomped on it and put the fire out, but when he looked up again he discovered that half of the room was slowly starting to burn, also. Grabbing his jacket, Marc walked over to Sam and ushered him out the door, temporarily forgetting about their captives.
With Sam in the lead, the acquaintances walked down the hall, around the corner, and into the room that Derek and Shane were sitting in. Looking around, Marc found a fire alarm and pulled it. Immediately Derek and Shane were up and alert. "Come on boys, the building seems to have caught on fire," Sam said, not giving anything away. The two 16 year olds nodded and followed Marc and Sam back out the door as the proceeded to exit the building.
. . .
Back in the small room, the Spaz and Cyber were starting to cough. "Cyber, come on, we gotta go!" Spaz managed to choke out as he tried to pull Cyber towards the door. The 13 year old just shook his head and continued searching the floor for something. Moments later he apparently found what he was looking for, because he sat bolt upright gripping something. "Okay, you found it, now come on!" Spaz screamed, again pulling his friend to the door. Cyber willingly followed and they ran out to the hallway gasping for air.
After a few minutes of rest, the friends got up and started heading for the nearest emergency exit, while the fire alarm started to sound. "Guess we took care of that, huh?" Cyber said jokingly, while they started to descend the stairs. Spaz was about to reply, when suddenly flames burst through the wall to their left and lit the top of the stairs. Together their ran down two flights of stairs, but as they came upon the next one, a burning beam crashed in front of them, cutting them off. They ran into the hallway leading from floor they were on and into a room, staring out the window as the building next to theirs caught on fire and the one next to it, also.
"We are so going to be blamed for this." Spaz said staring at the catastrophe they had accidentally created.
