CHAPTER 11

(Cally's POV)

I woke up to find myself strapped to the chair. There were thick metal restraints over my wrists, ankles, and stomach. Well, isn't that just dandy?

I looked around. I was in a white room with padding on the walls and floor, like one of those rooms in movies where insane people in straight jackets are put. There was a small rectangular table in front of me with a lamp and a file on it. On the wall straight ahead, there was a mirror. I was certain it was one of those double sided ones like in NCIS that people can see through on the other side. Cheesy and obvious at the same time.

I stared at the mirror for a long time before I heard a door swing open then slam shut. In walked a man in his mid-thirties wearing a black suit and tie, and a pair of black sunglasses were tucked in his pocket. He sat down in the chair on the other side of the table and open the file, leafing through it. After he was satisfied, he looked at me. "Cally, last name unknown. Age sixteen, twin, abandoned by parents at age five. Extremely good with electronics and mathematics," he said, staring me down. "You have done something very, very bad, young lady. Do you know why you're here?"

"Let me guess, you want to buy some of my girl scout cookies?"

He gave me a hard glare. "I will have none of your snide comments or sarcasm. This is a serious matter. You broke into one of our highest secured facilities, and I need to know how and why."

I sneered at the man. "Well, first of all, I don't feel like telling a total stranger my secrets. Second, I wouldn't tell you anyways, and third, well, I really just don't like you."

That one got him. He angrily slammed his folder down on the table. Then he stood up, grabbed his briefcase, mumbled something about a raise, and stormed out of the room. I laughed. They had seriously left me alone? Wow, talk about stupid!

I closed my eyes and focused on one thought: sight. I barely felt my eyes move in my head as they started to vibrate and change shape. It was actually pretty painless, since I'd been through a lot worse recently, and then there's the fact I'd been doing since I was about, oh, two? Three?

As the transformation finished, I slid my eyes open a sliver. Didn't want the FBI to know my secret, now, did we? I carefully peered under my eyelashes towards the mirror. With my enhanced sight, I could see straight through it. I grinned after scanning the room and finding no one hiding and waiting for me to do something.

Closing my eyes again, I focused my brain on something else: moth. My arms and legs began to shorten, and my sight became blurred as I gained millions of little eyes. Another set of legs grew from my body and wings sprouted from my back. Finally, a set of antennae grew from my forehead. This was my escape plan.

I crawled off of the now huge chair, and flew over to the door. I landed on the ground and crawled easily underneath the thick metal door. Piece of cake! Now in the hallway, I glanced around. Feeling the slightest bit of a breeze from the right, I turned and flew down the corridor. After several twists and turns following the breeze, the smell of outdoors hit me and I arrived at a large door with a big, red EXIT sign overhead. I quickly crawled under the door and found myself in a parking lot.

A few men were getting out of their cars and walking towards the building, but then someone caught my eye. It was a girl, about my age, with long brunette hair. Her eyes were bright blue that darkened towards the iris, and she looked tall, like a runner or a basketball player. I would say maybe 5'9"-ish. She wore a black cropped jacket with a camo tank top underneath, and long black pants with black boots. She pulled her sunglasses down from the top of her head over her face, pulled a small case from her car, and closed the door. What startled me was that she was walking straight towards me!

Hurriedly, I flew up onto a dumpster about ten feet from the door. I sighed inwardly with relief as the girl walked up to the door, entered an access code, and walked inside. That had been too close for my liking!

Now that the escape was out of the way, I needed to get away from this building and back to my hideout in NYC. I flew up onto the roof. Noticing a small camera on the emergency door on the roof, I flew up on top of it. I focused my mind once more: eagle. I started to shake and my wings elongated and became feathered, as did the rest of my body. my front two pairs of legs melted into my body, and my back legs grew longer and hard, almost scaly legs with clawed toes growing in their place. My neck thickened and stretched longer, and my eyesight sharpened while an orange beak grew from my face. A thickly feathered tail sprouted behind me, and my body relaxed, the process over.

I turned my head left and noticed a very tall building. That would be the best vantage point from which to view the city. I flapped my wings furiously and took off, soaring for a few seconds then flapping again to gain altitude. I soared high above the building, then slowly began to circle back down, coming to a soft landing on the edge of the roof. I perched and peered at the scenery below. Something in the corner of my sight caught my eye, and I turned to look at it. To my horror, I was staring at the obelisk of the Washington Monument, and across from it on the far end of the long, rectangular pool, the Lincoln Memorial. I was in DC! It would take hours for me to fly back to New York.

Well, this day was just getting better and better, wasn't it?
