LUKE //

I chased after her like a bull set on a red target. sprinting to catch up with her. she was crying, shaking like no other; it surprised me that she could even run in the state that she was in, but of course, that didn't stop her from trying,

"baby! stop running!" I shouted ahead, growing tired of chasing her down the bumpy sidewalk. I was panting more and slowing down by now, having chased her 6 six blocks from the house that she hated ever-so-much.

she came to a slow before stopping completely, standing there while she shook with upset tears. I finally reached her, standing right behind her, just waiting for her to turn around.

"what?" she whimpered.

and it broke my heart.

her small, broken whimper was hardly loud enough for me to hear but I heard her.

she turned around to face me, I stroked her forearm with a gentle hand; afraid i'd break her somehow.

"you're running and running but do you even know where you're going?" I asked, giving her a sympathetic look even though she was too focused on my shoes to catch it.

"no," she admitted, sounding more defeated than ever, she pushed her head back to look at the sky, closing her eyes for a moment before speaking again, "just away," she shrugged with her shaking shoulders.

sadness took over, and my heart hurt for her. "away from what, baby? away from me?" I asked with a horribly sad tone and a frown to go with it.

"no, I just... away from myself, I guess," she sighed heavily, looking at me in the eye like she wanted me to see all of the sadness and hatred that she was feeling for herself at this very moment.

I wasn't mad, I wasn't annoyed, I was sad. she was running from something, and she didn't even know what. I looked up at the sky as of it held any answer for my hurting heart, but it didn't. so I asked, "why?"

she cried, tears tainting her cheeks, "my life sucks, there's so much I have to deal with but no solutions. I just wanna get out. I want to escape!" her voice was heavy and broken, like she was trying so hard to make the words sound normal, rather than mumbled whimpers that echoed through her hollow body.

I took one last glance into her eyes and only split seconds later did the words come out of my mouth. I opened my arms wide and whispered, "come here." I pulled her tight to my chest and whispered a shaky promise, "I can't guarantee a solution, but I can help."

her mouth moved against the material of my shirt as she spoke, "luke?" she called out to me.

"yes, baby?" I whispered back, kissing the top of her head with the softest kiss I could manage.

"do you still love me?" she asked quietly, the fear of being turned down was clear in her voice as she held on tighter. she didn't trust herself.

and my heart broke again.

so I said - with my voice more determined than ever - the truest statement I've ever spoken.

"you have no idea how much I love you, my heart is so full of it," I promised with a squeeze. she nuzzled her head into my body as I kissed her temple.

"thank you, luke," she praised, sighing into my warm chest.

"you're welcome, baby," I gave a small smile, and pulled away, letting the cold air wrap around the two of us, "lets go."
