Eveleigh's POV
She sat on the couch, alone. Her mother was working, her father, well, she didn't know her father. She was an only child, a very lonely only child. She was reading a book, a book of mystical lands and fantasies that were too good to be true. About a girl who is happy with a life full of beauty and brightness. The wind howled outside the window, it scared her. She never knew what to expect in the dark, she'd read so many books about so many scary things. So she never knew what was lurking in the shadows. The lights flickered, she glanced around the living room, frightened. She heard the whistle of the wind, and lightning flashed. She folded the page of her book down, and laid it on the table. She stood up slowly, stepping over the couch cushion to the window. She thought of windows as a door, a door to other worlds. And in her 10-year-old world, they existed. She took a deep breath and slid open the window. Peering out, there was nothing out of the ordinary, only the same old darkness of her backyard. But in her mind, she saw creatures wrecking havoc, goblins sneaking, stealing things from people. She also saw light things, happy things, like faeries and sprites who would lead her to a land of beauty. She stepped outside, the wind whipping around, blowing her hair around her face. She stepped forward a few steps, and she was pricked with a rose thorn. But she imagined a dark creature, clawing at her. She yelped and ran backwards, straight into a tree. She tripped over a root, and landed on her back. The monsters, so she thought, we're coming for her. She crawled backward slowly, when her hand slipped and she lost her hold. She fell and fell and fell deep into a pit.
She blinked opened her eyes, it was dark. Ever, the wind whispered. She looked around frantically, then began to calm. She knew this world, this was not the world of darkness but the one of light. She smiled to herself, and begin drifting into the world of her mind. The flowers grew tall above her head, the grass a brilliant crimson. The purple sky was filled with paper shapes, beautiful, fluffy clouds of orange. She skipped along a stone path, the stones long and emerald green. A few creatures twitted in and out of the branches, chirping with joyous laughter. Ever smiled, and shouted hello to everything nearby. A few curious heads poked out between the leaves. Their round eyes sparkling mischiviously. One came out in front of Ever, it's pale skin and vibrant yellow hair glowing in the sun. Ever waved hello, and the sprite grinned and wiggled it's fingers back. Ever laughed, and the sprite copied her. The sound of bells jingling brought out others from between the flowers. Many different types of creatures, some tall blue men with glittering horns, faeries with a shining pink aura, long winged people with purple tails, a round, glowing orb with hands and feet, and so many others. Ever knew immediately that they were all good, she could see it in their eyes. That is, if they had them. A winged girl walked up to Ever, and spoke in a strange language. She understood immediately. "Ättęlbu męhiö sonü," translated to "Welcome fair girl." The winged girl's name was Anett, and Ever thought she was beautiful. Anett walked closer to Ever, feeling more comfortable in her presence. Ever giggled excited, she was already making new friends.
Ever walked, hand-in-hand, with Anett. She said they were going to show her a special place, because Ever is such a special child. Anett whispered to Ever, telling her about this place and it's name, Ëntersëlvü. Anett explained that it means "land of light" in ancient Ëntersëlvunian. Ever nodded, understanding. They came upon a strange place, a circle formed of branches weaved with golden strands. In the center of the circle, there was a single tree-sprout. Ever smiled, in her young mind, the sprout was a play-thing for her. She released Anett's hand and skipped into the circle. Anett cried out the words, "nöbrü!" And for Ever, they did not translate. She was confused, she couldn't understand what Anett was saying. She began to walk out of the circle, but was pushed back by some invisible force. Ever banged on it, yelling for someone to let her go. Anett looked sadly at Ever from outside the circle, and placed one hand on the thing holding her inside. Then she said something, in clear English. She said, "I will get you back." Then Ever yawned, and the sight of Anett faded. Soon, all there was to see, was black.
Ever, a voice whispered, Come on Ever, wake up. She blinked her eyes open, to see the sky above her. She turned her head slightly and saw her mother crouching beside her. Her mouth was moving but no sound was coming out. Ever looked back up at the sky, "Blue," she croaked. Her mother stopped, and stared. Her mouth formed and "O" shape.
"You talked Ever! You talk-" She zoned out. The sky was blue, not purple. Where did my home go? Ever thought, And my friends? A small tear slipped out of her eye. Ever quickly wiped it away before her mother saw. Then she remembered, Anett said before she left, what was it? Her mother was rushing her inside, out of the cold, out of the wind. Ever zoned back in when her mother explained that she found her in the morning, laying next to a tree, passed out. She was devastated, her friends weren't real. The only friends she had in a long time weren't real.I gasped, taking in a deep breath. Then breathing heavily, I sat up. I felt like I had just run a marathon underwater.
"Eveleigh!" I heard Mabel scream. She ran over to me and threw her arms around me. "You're okay! I thought that thing had done something horrible to you!" She pulled back and look into my eyes, grinning. Then her smile slowly faded and her brows creased with worry. "What's wrong?" She asked. I looked at her for a second then my eyes welled with tears.
"It's awful!" I cried, "I remember everything from my childhood." I looked at her, "I never told you this but something happened to my mom, it's happened to everyone in my family who was a dreamer. Th-they lost their memory. I-I don't know how to explain it but they don't know that they were ever a dreamer, and it's going to happen to me!" I cried, tears pouring down my cheek. Mabel just hung on to me, whispering to me,
"Shh, it's okay Eveleigh, it'll be okay."
