Andrew’s POV
I had Austin call the fire department while I carried Jessie up the stairs after she passed out. I laid her in the bed and stared at her peaceful sleeping face.
I sighed and sat down on the bed and heard a soft knock on the door. “Come in, it’s open.” I said calmly.
James’ head peeked through the crack of the door and he sheepishly stepped in looking at his feet. “Can I come in?” He asked all innocently.
“Of course Bud, don’t be afraid I don’t bite.” He stalked over to where I was and sat on the bed, “is sshe alright?”
“Yeah, just a little surprised. What about you? Are you alright?”
He shrugged his shoulders and got this distant look in his eyes, “why did this happen? What did we ever do wrong?”
His eyes started to water, “I miss grandma and grandpa!”
I instantly took him in my arms and whispered soothing words in his ear, “It’s going to be alright Bud, and I’ll take you to them tomorrow ok?”
He shook his head yes and yawned, “You sleepy?” I asked. He replied, “Yes.” I picked him up and laid him down on my bed, not two seconds later he started snoring.
I lightly chuckled and kissed his forehead. Turning to Jessie, I wanted her to be comfortable so as stealthy as I could, I lifted her shirt over her head and slipped one of my t-shirts on her.
I walked to my shower and washed up before going to my closet and grabbing an extra cover and pillow and made my way downstairs to the couch.
As I was in the process of going to sleep, I heard a noise coming from the kitchen. I quickly got up and listened closely. I heard a creak and picked up a bat that was conveniently placed in the corner and slowly stalked to the kitchen.
As I approached the kitchen I seen a shadow sitting on the counter and I charged towards the figure and started attacking them with the bat.
“OW, OUCH, dude STOP!!”
Wait a minute, I know that voice! “Austin?” I stopped hitting him and turned the lights on. “What are you doing up so late?”
“Dude, who gives you the right to ask me questions when you just attacked me?!” I glared at him, “Ok, fine! I was hungry so I made a sandwich. Since when is it a crime to get something to eat?”
“Since you decide to do it at night after the events of today.” I crossed my arms and leaned against the refrigerator.
“Hey I’m the innocent one here!” He exclaimed defensively raising his hands.
I rolled my eyes and sat the bat down while sitting down at the table. I folded my hands together and placed them behind my head, “something is wrong with James.”
“Well duh something is wrong with him, he just watched his house burn down,” Austin finished with an eye roll. “Man you sure aren’t bright.”
I glared at him, “I know that idiot, what I mean is, something other than that is bothering him. I mean, when I looked into his eyes there was pain. More pain than just losing a house, like there was something he knew that I didn’t and it was physically hurting him.”
I sneaked a look at Austin to see him staring out the kitchen window, “Bro?”
“Yeah.” I answered curiously as to what he was going to say.
“My sandwich is ruined.” I threw my hands in the air and sighed in defeat.
“I’m serious here Austin!”
“I know bro! But I just don’t like thinking about sad things, they make me depressed.”
Calming down a little bit, “I know Austin, it’s just I hate seeing them go through pain because somehow, I can feel their pain.”
He came over and rubbed my back, “being the older twin I suppose it’s my duty to cheer you up but quite frankly, I’m no good at this and you ruined my sandwich so goodnight.”
I stared at his back and watched him walk away, “yeah, good talk Bro.” I whispered to myself.
I yawned and realized it was time for me to go to bed.
As I lay down on the couch I knew there was no way I was going to get a lot of sleep tonight.
*******
I was in the middle of a dream when I felt a small poke on my shoulder.
“Andrew.” A voice spoke so softly I barely heard it.
I groaned and turned onto my side feeling another poke on my nose, “Andrew.” That same voice spoke a little louder.
“No ma’am I don’t know where the giant octopus’ son is."
I heard a giggle and felt a poke in my ear followed by, “ANDREW!”
I bolted up and stood in a defensive stance, “What, who is it?!” I frantically looked around only to find James standing in front of me covering his mouth with sniggering.
“What’s up Little Man?”
“Um, Jessie is shouting in her sleep. She woke me up screaming, ‘NO, NO, GET AWAY FROM ME!’ Then a couple of minutes later she screamed, ‘LEVAE MY BROTHER ALONE!’ It scared me and I didn’t know what to do so I came down here to get you.”
I took ahold of his hand and lead him upstairs. When we got to my room I noticed Jessie was covered in sweat and her sleeping face was set in a frown.
When I looked at the bedside clock it read, ten o’clock in the morning. I shook her awake and watched as she jumped and cowered away until she focused her weary eyes and on me and I asked, “Are you OK Jessie?” She raised an eyebrow in confusion and then as if all of her memories came back her eyes started to water but nonetheless she shook her head yes.
She looked fragile and full of sorrow and I wanted nothing more than to hug her. So with as much confidence as I can I reached forward and took her in my arms cradling her with as much affection as I can give.
At first she was reluctant, then she melted in my arms and held me tight like I was going disappear if she let go.
She whispered in my ear, “What am I going to do?”
