It was Saturday and the wind was blustery; I hadn't had a great night's sleep as I could hear the wind yowling away from outside my window. Not able to stand it any longer, I got up and dressed quietly, heading down to the common room with a quill and some parchment. I felt kind of guilty; I hadn't written to mum or dad for about a month. I wasn't a good pen pal.
I settled in front of the fire, and began to write.
Dear Mum,
Sorry I haven't written for so long, I've had loads of work to do. Don't worry, Cousin James is looking after me, though he's the one who needs watching. He gets about 4 detentions a week with Sirius, who is his best friend.
Lizzie and me visited Hagrid the other weekend, which was really fun but I think I might have chipped one of my teeth on his rock cakes.
Please don't check with dad whether you got the better letter; I am sending you both identical ones. Also, who am I going to for Christams, cos its not very far away. If its easier, I can stay here, because I don't think its a good idea for you two to be in the same room.
Lots of love,
Ellis x
I proceeded to write an identical letter to the one I just wrote on another bit of parchment but putting 'dad' instead. It would be so much easier if they lived in the same house, but that would be nigh on impossible. If they were within shouting distance they would always argue.
I rolled up the two bits of parchment and put them in my pocket, ran upstairs to get a scarf and gloves and then back down again to head to the owlery.
The wind flipped my hair back behind my shoulders, I was glad I had worn a scarf. Up the stairs to the owlery, there was rainwater on the steps. In the owlery, I called down one of the school owls. One flew over obediently and I fastened my letters to her. She flew out of the window and I got up to leave. I walked through the door, looking backwards to catch a last glimpse of the owls.
"OW!" I stumbled back rubbing my head. I had crashed into someone. "Sorry," I said quickly, not wanting to find out who I hit.
"You should be more careful, mate."
I opened my eyes glaring and blazing to see Sirius smirking at me. "Oh brilliant," I muttered. Louder I said, "What are you doing here?"
"Aside from being smacked in the head..." I cut him off with a glare. "What do you think? I'm posting a letter."
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, I really didn't think of that," I said sarcastically. He grinned and flicked his hair, much in the same way that James did when Lily Evans was around.
"So, you staying for Christmas?" he asked, beginning to walk towards the owls and calling down a large black one and tying the letter to its leg.
"I might be, unless my mum and dad agree to something."
He followed me back down the stairs. "Agree to something? What do you mean?"
I felt my eyebrows crease. I hated this subject. People always wanted to pity you. "They're divorced."
Sirius looked at me as though I was speaking Gobble-de-gook and then I remembered that he probably didn't know what that meant. "They're not together anymore."
Sirius scratched his head. "Oh. Sorry about that."
I shifted my feet uncomfortably, putting my hands into my pockets. Sirius put his arm around my shoulders. I tried to shrug it off, but it felt nice. Warm.
"You know what? My parents hate me. So at least yours like you." I watched his expressions, but he carried on grinning. As though he was proud of his parents hating him.
"Is that a good thing?" I said.
Annoyance crossed his face for the first time. "I don't want to be liked by them. A bunch of death eaters, the lot of them."
"But they're your family-"
He took his arm off and faced me. "None of them is my family."
I looked up towards the sky. "Sorry."
Sirius looked slightly guilty. "Don't worry about it. Like your parents, mine are a touchy subject."
I smiled. "At least yours don't argue all the time."
Sirius smiled as well.
-Sirius-
What cares what Prongs said? He was still chasing after Evans, he can't talk. And I KNOW I don't fancy her. Its not like that.
She tossed her hair out of the wind, the rising sun relflected off it. Her eyes were shining, such a nice colour and her- whoa Padfoot slow down man. Shut up!
"Are you going to the party tomorrow?" she asked, her hand pulling back a strand of hair behind her ear.
"What party?"
"The one in the common room everyone has been talking about, for the quidditch captains birthday."
I opened my mouth to say yes, but then realised what night it was tomorrow. Full moon. I shook my head. "Sorry no. Us Marauders are-erm- busy tomorrow night."
She frowned. "Busy?"
"Yeah, but its kind of a secret. I cant say what we're doing."
She glared and I put my hands up in surrender. "Sorry, but I really cant."
-Ellis-
WHY couldn't he tell me? What was so important that he couldn't say anything? Well, maybe I could stay up tomorrow and see what they do. It was full moon, wasn't it? I wonder if that has anything to do with it...
