Sarah’s POV

*****************************************************************************************

“I can’t believe they’re gonna give us a new teacher the last week of school! Why don’t they just give us a spare?” We’d been sitting in our career class for ten minutes waiting for this new teacher, since ours went into labour.

“They’re not gonna stop class for every little thing.” Caleb rolled his eyes, but his eyes were laughing at me.

“Going in to labour isn’t a little thing Caleb,” Kelcie interrupted from beside me.  “Shh, I think this is him.”

I rolled my eyes and turned toward the front of the class. A short preppy looking guy stood at the front. His short brown hair was messy, and he had dull gray eyes. His blue sweater vest was wrinkled, and he looked like he just rolled outta bed, and you could tell by his nervous glances that he was fresh out of teachers college. Perfect.

“Okay class, let’s start with introductions. I know you all know each other but I, on the other hand do not.” The poor guy glanced around the room nervously, and zeroed in on Justin sitting at the front. “Okay start saying your names and I’ll take attendance.”

I tuned out the flat tomes of my class mates and tried to read my new teachers face. He seemed harmless. I waited to hear the name Kelcie Carson from my best friend’s mouth, but instead I felt a nudge to my arm and everyone looking at me; I apparently don’t listen very well.

“Do you have a name?” the teacher inquired lazily.

“Sarah.”

“Sarah,” my teacher repeated mockingly “No last name, Madonna?” I blinked at him stupidly, so much for harmless. No way was I letting some newbie teacher mock me in front of my friends.

“Well that’s one more name than you shared, Mr....?” I replied nonchalantly, my eyes wide with innocence.

I saw his face redden as the class quietly snickered.  I could feel Caleb grinning behind me, as the teacher glared at me; we were going to have a great final week. “My name is Joseph Stevens, thank you for your highly intellectual question, Madonna.”  The preppy teacher recovered.

“Anytime.”

He ignored me, of course, and continued. “You will call me Mr. Stevens, not Joey, or J-Man, or even Stevie. Got it?” He addressed the question to the class but stared at me, I grinned back a leaned in to my seat.

The rest of the class went by in a blur. Textbook readings, and class discussions, all it meant was, I was one step closer to summer vacation. The bell rang and a dashed out of class and tossed my stuff in Kelcie’s locker.

“What’s got in to you?” She asked surprised. Okay, so maybe I was one of those seen but not heard kind of girls, and I’m pretty sure that was like the second time I’ve ever talked back to a teacher.

I laughed and shrugged. “I don’t know summer fever?”

“It’s actually called spring fever.” Caleb says coming up behind me, “So I think you’re a little late with that excuse.” I said nothing; I knew it was useless to argue with him.

“Hey, do you have a ride tonight?” Kelcie asked.

“I totally forgot to ask!” I gasped.

“Where are you guys going?” Caleb asked suspiciously. Why was he looking at me like that?

“The drive-ins having an all-nighter,” The little light bulb in my brain kicked in. “Hey you should come too!  You could bring you’re truck and we can make a bed in the back.”

“Who’s all going?”  I could see the doubt all over his face.

“Just me, Kelcie, and Colin, c’mon it’ll be fun right?” Kelcie nodded silently, and studied Caleb; weird, she was never this quiet.

“I don’t know...it’s not really my scene.”

“C’mon, it’s summer let’s live a little.” I smiled and squeezed his arm. “Please, for me?” I don’t know why I said that, I never flirted with Caleb, we’ve been friends forever. But whatever the impulse, it worked.

He grinned and ruffled my hair before walking away.  “Anything for you, Madonna.”
