"What do you mean you haven't kissed a girl before?" Luke asked astounded as he pushed another trolley towards Michael.
"I-I don't know, never really occurred to me that I needed to."
"Cmon, there are plenty of hot girls around who are a lot better than the one I served this afternoon."
Michael just shrugged as he pushed the trolley back into the stall. Luke decided to play '21 Questions' and Michael obliged since he didn't think Luke thought they were that close to ask personal questions. He wanted to know all about not just his favourite things but what kind of mints he eats to give him the intoxicating fresh breath as he talked to what he thinks about at night. But it was creepy wasn't it?
"Okay your turn," Luke said slowing his pace.
"What number are we up to?"
"19
"Okay um..."
Michael didn't want to come off as a weirdo but he didn't want Luke to find him boring. A nervous bubble was building in his chest, full of words and questions needed to be said but he just blurted out the first thing that seemed decent.
"Every fantasised about being with your teacher?"
"Of course," he laughed. "Who doesn't?"
Honestly no one at school caught his eye, especially not teachers. He wished Luke went to his school. He hung around a lot of girls, some of them fancied him but they were boring and were too superficial for his liking. The guys were alright but they didn't talk effortlessly like Luke did.
"When was the last time you were happy?" Luke asked slowly.
"Well I'm happy right now."
"No as in, 'I was so happy it felt like I had stepped out of my life' happy. For me it was when I went skiing with my parents, I never really experienced snow until then. Or it was it my 7th birthday where my dog at all my cake," Luke chucked leaning over his trolley.
Michael stared at his faded black Chuck Taylor's, fiddling with his woven bracelets trying to rack his brain for a response. Sure he'd had some great childhood memories too but weren't kids always excited about everything?
"Um, earth to Michael?" Luke asked questioningly, waving his lanky arm in the air.
Michael snapped out of his trance, running his hands nervously through his coloured hair.
"Sorry," he replied.
"So being sorry is your best memory?" Luke teased slowly sliding the last trolley over with him.
"Out of your entire 18 years of walking this universe you decide that -"
"TODAY," Michael blurted out.
"...is Monday?"
"No, I mean today is, well...getting this job I guess, um -"
"Getting this job is your happiest memory?"
"Yeah..."
Luke raised an eyebrow.
"It's just that no ones ever taken me seriously before I got an 'actual' job," Michael explained. "I finally proved to my parents that I wasn't the lazy lost cause out of all the other kids in this country."
Michael rubbed his shoulder as silence settled between them, the only sound heard being the click and scrawl of Luke's pen, marking off their last task.
"Well, if this is your happiest memory," Luke began, putting his hand on Michael's shoulder. "Mindy sure ain't paying you enough."
Michael stood still, baffled as Luke made his way back to the lunch room. He was so astounded by his touch that he was considering never washing his shirt again.
"You coming?" Luke yelled across the store. "You're going to be late," Luke said coyly.
"Late?" Michael replied, jogging over. "For what?"
"You, me, my place," Luke replied smoothly. "It's only 7 you know and I was thinking that we could Netflix and ch -"
Luke was cut off by the store lights flickering burning out, drowning the pair into complete darkness. Michael's breath hitched in the middle of his throat as he fumbled to find his phone to have a light source. He shakily clicked the home button. No reception.
Luke stood beside Michael, peering at his screen. The pair stood so close that Michael could smell Luke's intoxicating cologne.
"I'm guessing it's HBO and no then?"
A/N: It's been a minute (or two years actually, because I forgot the password) but I'm back - and I've decided to continue this story! I had half of his chapter saved from the last time I was logged on and I've just tired to continue from that last point. Also I updated the cover and it's got references to this book (oooh), anyway hope you enjoyed x.
All the love,
E.
