chapter four

Lunch was awkward. It consisted of Andy asking Jordan and I questions that Jordan, in particular, didn't want to answer. Jess wasn't helping either. Once she saw Andy she kept stuttering and was pretty nervous.

But then she kept humming Love is in the Air whenever she was near our table.

After breakfast, Jordan and I headed over to the basketball stadium because Jordan had state practice. I just sat on the bleachers scrolling around on my phone. As I was looking through my Facebook feed, a news article caught my attention.

ANDY MAYO and Mysterious Brunette Woman Spotted in Suburban Sydney

At various times during this week, three-time Academy Award winner, Andy Mayo was sighted in Eastern suburbs of Sydney and in town. But something that was consistent throughout these sightings was a brunette woman right beside him. In many pictures, she is clutching onto his arm, holding Andy's hand and in one lucky snap we found, they appear to be kissing!

So who is this mysterious woman? She seems to be of around her mid-forties in age and quite short, if I add. She also appears to have a ring on her special finger, if you know what I mean!

Is this love for Andy? Or is this all a hoax, a publicity stunt? Is Hollywood's most eligible bachelor off the market for good?

Woah. I'm in a state of pretty much what the hell is going on?  What Luna is scared about is already starting to happen. And it's going to get worse from here on out.

"Ready to go, Purple?" Jordan asks, "I already rinsed off, it's all good. I won't make the Choppa sweaty."

"Pffft. Yeah you will."

"I choose to cash in my nuggets now and for you to spill the gossip about your to be step father now."

"Fine. I only found out he was Andy Mayo last night. I'm still shocked." I start to explain as we walk to my beat up Toyota ute. I chose it because the boot is good for transporting my instruments.

"Is that literally all you know?"

"Yeah. I think we might have to move to the States though. It's where a lot of movies are filmed and more importantly, it's where Andy's home is. Did I tell you that Andy has a tune shack in his house? It's got all the groovy beats, vinyls, cassettes, CDs and recording and producing equipment. The band could come over there and we could make our own album!"

"Did you realise that if you have to go to America, you're halfway across the globe from the band. It's a big change." Jordan voices, coming to a stop at the drive through.

"Hi, what could I get for you today?" asks a girl.

"I'll have twenty nuggets and two frozen cokes, thanks." Jordan replies.

"Hey! You didn't get me any food! How could you? And I have to pay for everything as well!" I say.

"I got you a coke."

"Fine. But even just having Andy as my step dad could be our big break. Since I'm in it, people will know me and we won't be some random band. Our music isn't everyone's cup of tea but, at least we could get more recognition for all the effort we put into our music."

"I guess so." Jordan replies as he pays for and grabs our food. "Thank you."

The rest of the ride was silent. But when we arrived on my street, I could already hear the drums and guitars going off in the garage. I opened the garage door and there stood Jess, Daysha, Simon, and Sam. And Luna was sitting on one of the amps with a tambourine. 

"Okay since everyone's here, I'll announce my news, I have booked us for the local farmer's markets tomorrow, it's a 6AM sharp set up and we should be playing by 6:30. We need to practice for the battles. No complaining." Jess orders.

Jess doesn't play an instrument, nor can she sing. She just  wanted in on the band so she's our manager. Daysha plays lead guitar, Simon plays drums, Sam plays the trumpet and trombone, when not needed, he plays percussion, Jordan sings and I play bass and occasionally sing.

We run through our decided songs for battle of the bands. We sound pretty amazing. We all decide to sit down on the mat and brainstorm songs for our final performance. Jess finally chooses That's What's Up, for Jordy and I to sing as a duet.

"Dude, why is there a fancy car in our audience space?" Sam decides to point out.

"Oh, that's Audrey's fiance's car" Jordan replies with a cheeky tone. "He's pretty special if you ask meeeeeeeee"

"Oooh, when do we get to meet him?" Jess asks

"In a minute, I brought cookies for you kids." My mum barges in through the beaded doorway with a plate stacked high.

"Thanks Audrey!" my friends all say to her as they grab four cookies each.

"Did you save any for me?" Andy yells, coming through the doorway.

Now everyone's once full mouths drop open and mushed up cookies threaten to litter the carpet.

"Girls, I think something happened to your friends. They seem to be fish." Andy whispers to Luna and I.

"A-Andy Mayo?" Jess manages to get out.

"Yes, that's me."

"Uhhh"

"Yes, darling?"

"MMmmmuhh"

"Uh-huh, perhaps you should get back to practicing, Violet here mentioned she was in a band and I wanted to 'check you guys out' per say."

"Uhh okey. Why don't we rehearse battle of the bands again?"

"That sounds perfect."

"You heard the m-mman."

"One. One, two, three, four." Simon quietly shouts.

After a nerve wracking rehearsal, Andy seemed to like the band and Jess seemed to have calmed down and decided we weren't good enough to be practicing in the presence of Andy Mayo. She kept whisper yelling at us to 'pump up the energy', 'sing better', 'GET INTO IT! GET IN THE ZONE'.

"I think you guys are brilliant. You probably need to work a little bit on your vocals, hit the notes a little better but, I would definitely go to your concert." Andy says with a smile.

Everyone looks flabbergasted. I'd say we've done a good job.
