chapter five

The crowd seemed to like us at the farmer's market. I think Luna's face painting stall helped people stay near our little stage.  Or maybe it was Andy in sunglasses cheering us and singing along. He was being cute. Mum was bobbing along but he was going all out. Andy even got CHILDREN OF THE LOST  'tattooed' in cursive onto his arm by Luna.

After our set, Andy came to help pack up our gear and put it back into Jordan's van and the back of my ute. While my mother was continuously congratulating us, Jess kept telling us that we could do better.

"Jordan, did you even warm your voice up? It sounded like you just smoked three packs of cigarettes! You know it's bad for you not to warm up" Jess scolded.

"Pfft I don't need to warm up. I was a beast out there. A beast I tell you."

"If you don't mind me butting in," Andy started, "but I do think that Jordan's voice gives a unique quality to the band. You should warm it up, though. His voice gives a gravelly, if not, earthy quality. I think that Violet should sing more. Perhaps a solo performance would do some good to the band."

"I agree. I think that we should have Violet sing a piece." the usually quiet Daysha speaks up, "it would make us a little bit more different in the battle of the bands, having two singers."

"This isn't a good idea. As your manager, I wouldn't advise to go forward with it. The battles are on Friday, in six days. Virtually five. That means we all have to learn a new song, just for Violet." Jess reasons

"Well obviously Andy knows what he's talking about, I think we should go ahead with it. Who agrees?" Sam asks

"I think we all do" Jordan replies on behalf of the band

"Fine," huffs Jess, clearly not happy with our decision, "what about the song?"

"How about some nostalgia? Sam's Law of Song Choice?" smiles Sam

"Let's do it" I reply

Sam's Law of Song Choice is something we used to do when we were younger, and we didn't know what songs we should choose, and what our strengths as a band were. Basically, you pull out Sam's iPod, which has everything on it, from Justin Bieber to the Dixie Chicks to The Beatles to Panic! at the Disco, and press shuffle. Then you flip the iPod over so you get a surprise of what the song actually is. Need I remind you that there are over 5000 songs on that thing, so you have no idea what era, artist or genre the song is from.

We pressed shuffle and circled around the iPod in anticipation as it shuffled. We were all staring at the back of the iPod when finally a ukelele was heard

"JOSH DUN" Sam screamed

"Ahahhaha yes, this is perfect!" I laugh

The rest of the band sung along to The Judge, ignoring Jess's attempts to revoke the idea.

Andy and my Mum were smiling at each other while watching our mini jam session.

It was Wednesday, two days before the battles. It was back to rehearsing in the garage, with Jess stressing out about our new decision. We've decided to perform our two original decisions, Fall at Your Feet by Crowded House and San Francisco by the Mowgli's with the addition of The Judge, replacing That's What's Up.

There really is nothing to worry about since we've learnt and practised this song a million times before. We've just not had me sing it nor perform it in front of a crowd. Andy has been dedicated to helping the band perfect our songs. It's really nice having him around, he definitely knows his onions. Andy's even offered to pull some strings to help land us a contract. We don't want it, though, we want to work for our contract. He understands that.

We've decided that for The Judge, Daysha is going to play the ukelele part, Sam is going to play the drums and percussion, giving Simes a break and Jordan is going to bring out a chair for me to sit on while I sing.

We're the last act, so we're hoping that we'll leave a good lasting impression on the judges.
