"We should sing 'Tongue Tied' for our next performance." Jordan, my best friend, tells me.
"Only if you tell Jess." I say.
"Deal," Jordan says with a smile, "Do you want to go for a Macca's run?"
"No, I have to go pick up Luna in 15 minutes."
"Oh okay. Can you drop me off to the stadium then?"
"Sure."
We walk over to my car, my baby, and hop in. Jordan and I don't talk for the ride but chill to the familiar sound of The Killers for the short trip to the basketball stadium.
"Thanks, Purple," Jordan says with a grin as I roll my eyes. "Make sure to say hi to Luna for me."
"Yeah, yeah. Now get out" I instruct.
Jordan laughs. So do I.
~~~
I drive away with a smile on my face. That smile grows wider when I spot Luna in the car park of the local shopping centre.
"Hey Luna. How was it." I question.
"Boring." she says, "as usual"
"Do you feel like you're getting better?"
"Slowly."
Luna is my adopted sister. She was adopted by my mum when her dad died in a car accident. Her mum died from cancer when she was five years old. She had a twin sister, Tori, who also died. Tori had depression and self harmed to the point where she passed away. Luna has been diagnosed with anxiety, so my mum has put her into therapy.
"Mum's going on a date tonight and she said we could order pizza." I tell Luna.
"Cool."
The rest of the car trip was silent as Luna looked out the window. When we arrive home, Mum is rushing around tidying like a madwoman.
"What's happening? Why haven't you left for your date yet?" Luna asks.
"He's coming here." Mum says, still rushing.
"Who?" I question.
"Why don't we sit down and talk about it." Mum says.
We sit down, awkwardly, around the dinner table and Mum begins to talk.
"As you well know, I've been going out with my current partner for a while now," she begins, nervousness clear in her voice, "He wants to meet you two. Tonight."
"Nope." Luna is the first to speak.
"Honey, I know it's hard for you to meet new people, but, it would mean the world to me if you could get to know him." Mum speaks.
"I don't feel good today. I had to go to school then to the shrink. School was bad today." Luna explains quickly, "I don't feel well enough to meet a new person."
"Okay but, if you feel better later, please try to talk to him."
"Why do you want us to meet him so bad anyway?" I speak up.
My Mum's face instantly blushes and she looks nervous.
Luna and I look at each other questioningly.
"Uhhh," Mum begins, "Well... there is a reason..."
That's when I noticed something on her left hand.
So did Luna.
"Why didn't you tell us?! We don't even know what his name is for god's sake!" I scream - I don't know if I'm angry or happy.
"How long have you been engaged?" Luna asks quietly.
"3 months" Mum answers.
"Oh." Luna and I say in unison.
"So why didn't you tell us?" I push.
"Because of who he is." she answers.
"What?" Luna says.
"You'll find out. Now go get changed from your uniforms into something decent." Mum ends.
Luna and I both change. She's wearing a Blink-182 shirt and jeans. I'm wearing a Mowgli's shirt and jeans. Luna's straight blonde hair is cascading down her back while my short brown hair is in a careless bun.
As we head down the stairs, the doorbell goes off. I can tell Luna's anxious as hell from the look on her face.
"Are you sure you want to meet him? There's probably goi-" I begin.
"Yes. I'm sure." She says with a small smile.
As we're walking to the door, we can hear him and Mum talking.
"Audrey! You look lovely!" he says, obviously with a smile.
"Oh, thank you! Are you ready to meet the girls?"
"Definitely. Violet and Luna, right?"
"Right. I'll call for them now."
"Are you sure, Luna? Last chance." I whisper to her.
"Yeah."
She's dreading this moment. But she grabs my hand for support.
"Violet! Luna! Come down here please."
We walk towards the door, well me slightly dragging Luna.
And then I see his face.
"So why didn't you tell us?" I push.
"Because of who he is." she answers.
Oh.
