We exchanged glances, looking right into each other's eyes, like we were trying to make sure that the strangers were still alive, still human.
The girl and man were a lot more composed than we were. They both had medium sized bags strapped on. I glanced at Kaito, his grip still tight on the gun. His gaze was steely but I knew better. He was doing this for us.
"Survivors," the girl breathed again. I couldn't see her eyes all that well — she had goggles strapped on. She pushed them up, onto her forehead, and then grinned widely, swinging the door open.
"How did you find us?" Kaito said suddenly. The tall man looked at him. He pulled a kerchief out of his pocket and wiped his mouth.
"We heard you," he said. "And we saw you."
He motioned towards the window. We all nodded. They walked up to us. The girl offered her hand and I shook it.
"I'm Gumi," she grinned. Her eyes were bright but tired. Her right cheek was smeared with dirt, like she had fallen in the grass outside or something. "This guy here's Gakupo. Gakupo, shake."
"I'm not a dog..." The man muttered, but then he took my hand and shook. His hand was big and rough, and strong. "Nice to meet you...well, as nice as it could be 'round here."
"But hey, it's pretty nice," Gumi nodded. "We've been driving through town, trying to find people. The shelters were all destroyed..."
"Wait, shelters?" Rin's eyes lit up. "There's shelters?"
"It's pointless, there's nothing left."
"Hey, hey, that's not true..." Gumi said. She looked at us. "We've only started searching, and look! We found you guys. You..."
"I'm Miku," I said.
"Kaito." Kaito shook their hands. He looked...strange. More than just distressed. His eyes were cloudy. Not so steely anymore. He was biting his lip.
"Rin," Rin said, "And this is Len...my twin brother."
They shook Gumi and Gakupo's hands.
"Now...we better get to work," Gakupo said. He walked over to the window. "There's quite a few of them outside...you see that?"
We walked over and looked out. He was pointing at a dull grey minivan, carelessly parked against the fence. The bodies were wandering outside, not really interested in the vehicle, it seemed.
"That's our ride," Gakupo said. "Guess they gave up on trying to get into the car."
"Huh?" This was Len.
"They were trying to get to us when we were inside," Gumi said. "No humans, no interest."
"But we have firepower," Gakupo said, motioning to the backpack. "That's how we got through, this far, at least...and luck. Anyways, we don't have a lot of time, we have to get moving."
He strode over to a small table that stood by one side and set his bag down on it, making a loud thump. He unzipped it and pulled out an old, folded up city map.
"This is where I'm from," he said, pointing to a green dot on the map. It wasn't too far from our neighbourhood. "That's Gumi."
Their homes were both little green dots. A few community centres and such were marked with red circles. Most of them had 'x's marked over them, too. A thin, black line trailed past their marked homes and into our area.
"The announcement's been playing for a while now," Gumi said, pulling a small radio out of her bag. She extended the antenna and set it down next to the map. She turned it on and we listened. It was a staticky, artificial, female voice.
