Chapter 2 (on the train and in the capitol)

I feel despiration. Anxiety. Responsibilty to keep him alive. I will not kill the love of my life. Maybe he will though. He has been raised in an enviroment without attatchment to anyone. He tells me he loves me. But I think I love him more than he could imagen. As the peace keepers guide us into the area where you say your goodbyes, we are greeted by Enobaria, our instructor.

"Hello! I'll let you guys say your farewells and then we'll get on the train and be in the capitol in about 30 minutes!"

We nod. I look at Cato for a second. He doesn't look back at me. As if he's disappointed or mad, I can't understand why we can't talk it out! He turns his back and walks toward a room, and I turn and go toward mine. My family is there. Well only my mother.

     "Clove!"

She says as in she's happy. But I know my mother's tones. She is not happy. "Mom!" We crash into each other! She trys not to cry. She knows about my relationship with Cato. She knows there is only one victor.

"Sweet-heart, Cato... he's just a boy...there are.."

I cut her there, cause I know I won't do what she was going to tell me next. You can kill him.

"Mom, I'll try my best at winning, I'll try to forget him after the Careers break up, I'll try to win without the pain of killing a loved one!"

She nods, holding back tears. "Mom, why didn't dad come?"

"Clove, you know why, he doesn't like this at all. He's better off not saying goodbye."

"Mom, I love you! I'll see you in a couple weeks!"

She plants a kiss on my forehead, and leaves. Will I ever see her again? Now I partly understand how my dad feels.

We board the train and sit in two chairs. Enobaria sitting in front of us. "So! Are you guys excited?"

"I guess." Whispers Cato.

"Well do you guys know each other? You haven't even looked eachother in the eye!"

Tell me about it! Then right after she says that, Cato turns his head and locks his eyes into mine. It was a shock at first. But I stared back. What did I see? Definatly not Cato. Instead of a warm, lovely shade of blue, it was a lighter brighter shade, like ice. It scared me. Was the Cato I knew for probably my whole life, turned back against me?I felt betrayal. I decided to team up with him. To not die. To win. After the long stare.

Cato turned to Enobaria, " Well you see, I don't want people to know this.."

"Oh of course not! My lips are sealed! Go ahead!"

Cato continues," She's my girlfriend." He stands up to leave he looks back at me and then leaves.

Enobaria asks, " Is that all true?"

"Yes." I whimper.

Then leave. I go to my room and find to my suprise, Cato. Sitting on the bed.

"Clove, why did you volunteer for Gold?"

"I...I...She..said she.."

"Why Clove?"

"She told me before the reaping began, she never wants to go in the games, and when her name got called I just couldn't. I've known her for a while now."

"It's not like she would do the same for you! Now look where we are!"

"She's my friend Cato." I say fiercly.
