Scott smiled as he talked on his phone, writing some stuff down. Mitch came down and hopped on the counter, watching his brother curiously. He wondered what is like to talk on the phone. No texting, no FaceTime, no translator, just talking.
That will be the day.
After a few minutes, Scott hung up and smiled at Mitch. Mitch smiled back, happy to see Scott happy. Scott sighed in complete bliss at the news.
*I have wonderful news and they are going to benefit all three of us* Scott began, hopping a bit. *I signed Kirstie up for a grieving class. Well, all three of us. The group she is going to helps with drug abuse.*
Mitch gasped happily, clapping excitedly. Maybe Kirstie will open up to them.
*That's amazing, Scott. Is there a class for deaf people?* Mitch asked shyly, hoping for a positive answer. Scott sighed sadly as he shook his head. *Will I be in the class you're in then?*
*Yeah, but it's for adults. I'm sorry, Mitch* Scott apologized, hugging his brother kindly. Kirstie came into the kitchen, already annoyed. "You are going to be a very lucky girl."
"Why?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. She scoffed as she crossed her arms. "Are you grounding me from breathing too?"
"No," Scott answered, shaking his head. Kirstie nodded as if to tell him to continue. "All three of us are going to attend grieving classes now. You are going to be on one for drug abuse and how to handle it."
"What the heck, Scott?" She asked angrily. "You can't keep controlling my life! You want life to be all okay yet e mine terrible! You act like you are the father of this house yet you aren't! And guess what, Mitch?!"
She signed something to her younger brother, making him gasp sadly. She stomped upstairs, causing Scott go glare at her. He shook his head as he hugged Mitch gently.
*She does not mean any of those words, okay? Don't worry about it. I love you.*
Mitch smiled weakly, trying to fight off the tears that were bound to come. He nodded as he signed back to Scott, happier yet still hurt by his sister's words.
*I love you, too.*
~~~
"I want to leave," Kirstie complained when the three of them walked into the church. "It's at a church? We haven't been to a church for so long."
"Things change," Scott told his sister in a gruff voice while signing. Mitch adjusted his hearing aid, jumping every time it became staticky. "Either you go to these classes or I will make sure that you have to do community service hours until Mitch's graduation."
Kirstie rolled her eyes and sighed heavily. Scott stood by his word, knowing that he will stick by it. Mitch looked at the windows, adoring how the sunshine seemed to capture every color. He smiled to himself, not noticing how Scott and Kirstie seemed to having a mental argument. Kirstie finally sighed heavily and nodded.
"Fine, I'll do it. Just know that I won't stop smoking," Kirstie finalized, shaking her head. "Where are these stupid classes anyway?"
"Down the hallway," Scott answered, looking down at Mitch. Mitch pressed into his hearing aid, closing his eyes in pain. *Are you hearing aids staticky again?*
*As always* Mitch answered, removing his hand. *I feel like I'm sixty five.*
Scot laughed as he walked up to the coordinator of the classes. She smiled up at them and gave Scott a clipboard with papers on it.
"The Hoyings, I haven't seen you three for so long," she exclaimed happily, noticing how Mitch pressed onto the hearing aids ."Oh...Mitch...how...are...you...do...ing?"
I would be doing fantastic if you weren't speaking to me like I spoke in a different language. Wait.
"He's doing great," Scott answered, giggling a bit when he knew Mitch's real answer. Hey, it's a brother's intuition! "I'm here to check in for the grieving classes."
"Of course! Kirstin is in Room 34 and you and Mitch will be in Room 35. It's good that you three are doing these classes. God bless you."
Scott nodded his thanks as they walked to the rooms. They used to go there for small groups, but they stopped going after their parents passed away. Church friends stopped talking to them and the only church friend they really have is someone named Jake, but he doesn't come down to see them as much as he used to. Scott sighed to himself, hoping that these classes with make the three siblings have the strong relationship they used to have.
Please make us strong again, Mom and Dad.
~~~
Kirstie walked into her class, not sating goodbye to her siblings. Eight people, making her eight, were in there and they didn't even look at her. She smirked as she began to people-watch.
Girl that's tall...cocaine addiction.
Boy with glasses...drinking problem.
Girl with snapback...marijuana.
Boy that has green eyes...ecstasy.
Girl that has obviously dyed hair...LSD...lots of it.
Boy with huge dimples...has hookahs of his own and hookah bar no one knows about.
Girl with long brown hair and dimples...woah, she's gorgeous. Wait...what?
The girl with long brown hair and adorable dimples walked up to Kirstie. The girl had to be at least five feet tall, making her the shortest person in the room. She smiled at Kirstie and offered her hand.
"I'm Ariana Grande."
~~~
Scott and Mitch smiled at each other before walking into the class. Mitch adjusted his hearing aid and sighed angrily. He took both hearing aids out, putting them in his pocket. Scott rubbed his back softly, frowning a bit.
*I know. You hate those, but we'll find a better alternative. Maybe some surgery will help you in the future.*
Mitch laughed as he nodded, hoping that Scott's words of hopefulness were true. He just wants to wake up and hear again. He sees Scott singing all the time and he will do anything just to hear that soulful voice again. Mitch sighed as he nodded, looking at his brother.
*I'm ready to go inside. Let's go.*
Scott nodded as he opened the door, almost gasping at the people inside. There was the therapist and two other people. He smiled at them, wanting to get out immediately.
"Oh, Scott and Mitch. I'm Dr. Rachel Platten. It's nice to see you two again after all these years. Oh, these two are Avi and Kevin Olusola! They'll be with us."
Scott nodded as he walked into the room, Mitch following him slowly. There is nothing more he wants to do than to run away from everything. He sat down, shaking slightly. He has to reveal the truth now, right in front of the new neighbors.
Oh no.
