Of course his answer was sporadic, not thought through, and said just to make me even more concerned .... annoyed than I already was.

' I'm not obliged to tell you anything about my personal life,' he mumbled out, ' That's not part of the job description of a secretary.'

Why wouldn't he look at me ? Was the floor that interesting? Would he rather be working for the floor? And what did he mean 'obliged '? He did anything he wanted whether he was obliged to or not.

'It's also not part of the job of a secretary to tour the streets of London in a dress and with a sack full of onions at the ready, but you did it anyway. Tell me. Now.'

He didn't say a word, and as disturbing as that was,  it was extremely aggravating,  when I wanted him to be quiet he talked endlessly and when I wanted him to talk he sat there and stared at the floor.

A wicked idea flashed through my mind, he didn't want to talk did he? 'If you will not tell me, I'll deduct the time we spend arguing from your wages."

I heard her gasp, and mentally congratulated myself on how well I knew her.

Him.

Him.

He inhaled rather noisily, perfect waste of time, and then spoke,' Well...'

I stopped an exasperated groan from coming out,'Yes ?'

I didn't expect what he said, not even a smidgen.

' I'm being pursued by a man.'

Pursued? Her life was in danger ? But, why? And who? Was it because she worked for me? Did someone see her? How life threatening is the situation? Should I place her under guard?  In an instant all these thoughts ran through my mind and more, but all I said was 'What?'

I raced to where she was sitting grabbed her hands and saw that the floor no longer had her attention, I did. Good, I needed answers, now. When did this start ? Who would dare try to hurt my little ifrit? Who needed to die to protect her ?

My little ifrit ? At that thought I saw red someone was going to be hurt and she was going to give me answers? There was no time to waste. She'd wasted enough already.

'Why didn't you tell me about this earlier?' I asked, leaving no room for argument.

'Why should I? It  was none of your business!'

Was she serious? Her life was in danger and this is what she tells me? What was wrong with her?

'None of my business? A man has been chasing you through London, and it's none of my business? Tell me , is he connected with Simmons? What did he want? Did he mention the file, or threaten to harm you? How far did he pursue you? Was he on foot, or horseback? How did you escape?'And this time she had better bloody answer.

Then for a second humour flickered through her eyes, and she looked as though she would laugh. What the bloody hell did she find amusing about being pursued by a man?

'Err... Mr Ambrose. When I said he's pursuing me, I meant he wants to marry me.'

My hands lost their grip, and my mind went blank, and so I voiced the only thought I had.

'What?'

'He's trying to get me as his wife, not chasing me through town with a knife in his hand.'
