Without further ado .......

Song goes with the hot part.

I stood on the helm of the ship, gently guiding the Valiant on her course. It was the simplest thing in the world steering a ship in calm waters, whichever way you leaned the rudder was the way the ship would go. But then, the moment always came when mother nature decided to throw you a curveball, and in that single instant, all hell could break loose.

"Captain, it's beginning to approach dark, shall I instruct the others to retire for the evening?" Briggs questioned, pulling me out of my calm reverie.

"Have they let out the narrowed the sails? Cleaned the deck? And tied all other loose ends?"

"Yes, Ma'am."

I nodded my consent, "It'll cut our next rest time short, but the new crew members need a rest on their first evening, and I don't think the others have quite recovered from the fun they had last night," I said, laughing.

"Aye, Captain. Especially Lantsov, man looks like he's apt to faint," he replied joining my laugh with his deep baritone chuckle.

As my laughter died, I looked out to the sea, both my foe and my savior, she was peaceful for now, but I could never forget how fast that could change, the last tim-

No.

"Captain. You have never burdened myself or the crew with your troubles, but I have noticed those moments you become melancholy all the time I've known you. This new man, Ambrose, is he trouble, do you know him? I wouldn't question your judgement, but there was an almost haunted look in your eyes when you spoke to him earlier. And all this afternoon, every time he was in your range of vision the look returned. He is a strange man, the crew are quite terrified of him, I can't quite understand why, but even I have a hard time meeting his gaze."

I was going to have to conceal my emotions better. Ironically, Mr. Stoneface himself was here to take an example of, "I knew him, and I can understand why he puts you all on edge. But he's a good man. Well, as good as a man like him can be, I suppose."

Nodding his approval, he left to dispatch my instructions to his peers.

Looking back at the sea, I let my mind wander to a time when life was simpler, when my worst imaginings were of what Mr. Ambrose had done to poor Simmons in his dungeon of terrors, or otherwise his basement.

I snorted, a good man indeed...

Walking down the stairs leading to the deck, I observed how silent it could be once everyone was in bed. This was usually the time I contemplated my next idea or the past...

"It's an impressive vessel. A bit too flamboyant, but nonetheless impressive."

I froze. Him.

"Mr. Ambrose, you are supposed to be in your quarters," I turned to glare at him.

"With the amount of noise those men make, even in sleep, I couldn't think, I came here for silence,"he said.

"Ah. Still strangely obsessed with silence," I smirked at the glare he sent my way, "Well you'll find plenty of that here. It's really the only time and place a person can think on this ship, other than my chambers of course." I continued without thinking.
