"Say hello to Yuuichiro." The director said. "Please try and make him feel welcome."
Mika walked past me and went up to Yuuichiro. "Hi." He said. "I'm Mikeala. You said you were eight right? Eight is the oldest group here so we'll be great friends!" Mika grabbed Yuuichiro's hand and shook it. Yuu looked at him like he was insane and pulled his hand away.
"What is wrong with you?!" He hollered. "What is this? Are you challenging me to see who'd be the leader here?"
"I'm the leader here and I was only trying to be your friend."
"Then what about her?" Yuu asked as he looked in my direction. I did a short wave and smiled before turning away with a scared look on my face.
"Is she like your second in command or something?"
"Huh?" Mika muttered as he turned to me as well. "Oh, that's Siri, I guess you could say that."
I tried my hardest to block out the conversation and continued with doing the girls' hair. I ran the brush through her short blue hair when I heard a loud thump noise. My head snapped back around at the boys to see that Yuuichiro was now on the floor and Mika standing above him.
"No fighting Mika." The director said.
"We're weren't fighting, we're making friends." Mika replied.
"I'm pretty sure that isn't how you make friends." I said nearly laughing. "But what do I know?"
"Oh? Really?" Mika said tilting his head.
"Yeah...?" I answered as I slowly brushed through the child's hair. How long have I been doing this?
"So, let's try again." Mika said turning to the dazed boy on the floor. "I'm Mikaela and I used be alone, like you, but now I have a family. So from now on, so will you." He reached out a hand for Yuu to take.
I smiled to myself, silently hoping that Yuu would take it and all this nonsense would blow off. But instead, I was slapped in the face with a piece of reality.
"Ridiculous..." Yuu muttered. "What family are you talking about?" He stood up and raised his voice. "I only ended up here because my father tried to kill me. And my mother, she went around spreading a rumor that I was the son of a demon. Then she lost her mind and killed herself."
I watched sadly as I felt small arms wrapping around my waist. I looked down to see the girl clinging to me. I gently caressed her head to calm her down.
"Do you get it now?" Yuu continued. "I don't have a family."
"I see." Mika said softly. "That must have been tough. Maybe I should say something about myself too."
I looked in his direction and my small lips curled into a frown.
"I was abused by my parents and then dropped out of a car and then taken in by the orphanage." He gave a childish smiled.
I unconsciously smiled as well and looked at the little girl still holding on to me. "See? It's gonna be fine." I said softly. She shook her head and kept her eyes glued on Yuu and Mika.
I looked at them as well when all the kids in the orphanage ran up and tackled Yuu while yelling out why they were in the orphanage. I let out a laugh and watched as the girl holding onto me let go and joined in on the fun. I got up and walked over to Mika and stood next to him.
"How's the recruiting going?" I said with a smile on my face.
"So far so good." He replied.
"I'm glad that didn't happen to me." I said pointing to the mess of kids on the floor.
"Oh really?" Mika said a strange glint in his eyes.
"Wh-KYAA!!" I screamed as Mika tackled me to the floor. "No! Get off me!" I went into a fit of laughter. I rolled around trying to get away from him but failed. "Stop!" I cried.
My laughing slowly died down but soon after the sound of a liquid falling down on the ground filled by ears. I sat up and everyone looked at the director. He had blood leaking out of his mouth and nose before falling down to ground unmoving.
"DIRECTOR!!" All the children cried as they ran to his aid.
"What the?" I muttered under my breath.
A loud crash noise came from outside and I darted to the windows. Fires littered the streets and smoke filled the skies. What's going on? Is this... The end of the world?
Seeming to emerge straight from the flames were a group of strangely dressed people. In the front of this group was a girl with long pink hair and she seemed to be the leader.
"This is a warning!" She said in a loud voice. "A lethal virus is spreading amongst you stupid human beings!"
"I'm afraid this is... The End of Mankind!"
A small gasp left my throat as if all the air in my lungs was being pulled out of me.
"However. The virus does not affect those less than thirteen years of age. This troop under the command of the third progenitor, Krul Tepes will henceforth be in charge of..."
I looked back at the children who were still huddled around the director.
"So, from now on the children of this district will be under our charge. Please, follow our instructions!"
"Mika..." I said barely above a whisper. "What do we do?"
"Yuu! Siri! I want you both to look after the kids! I'll take care of the director!" He yelled out.
"Mm." I nodded my head and moved over the children still around the director. "C'mon. That's enough now."
"B-but the director..." One of them said.
"Don't worry. Mika will look after him." I said as I took the child's hand.
Four years later
"Siri Hyakuya." I said calmly to the vampire who checked something off his clipboard and motioned for me to move along.
I winced at the tiny prick of a needle being stabbed through the side of my neck and draining a portion of my blood. It was daily routine. I wasn't fond of it but I knew if I tried to go against it, I'd be killed.
