I suspected something was up with Mac but wasn't too sure. He was acting a little shy around me for the past few days, like he wanted to say something but couldn't quite get it out.

I asked around to see if anyone knew something about what was going on.

"Hey, Stell, have you noticed Mac acting a little different around me lately? Like he wants to say something to me but can't?" I asked.

"I don't know, Cat, it could be nothing," the other detective replied. I sighed and shoved my hands into the back pockets of my jeans as she smiled and walked away.

Later that day, I ran into Hawkes. "Please tell me you've noticed Mac acting different around me, Hawkes."

He shrugged and went to go find Danny with some evidence. I was getting frustrated. I wanted to know what was up with my boyfriend, and no one was helping.

Minutes later, after I had walked back to my office, I got a text from Lindsay. "Meet me in layout. Big surprise waiting."

More confused than ever, I got up, pushed my phone into my pocket, and walked over to layout. Lindsay, Danny, Hawkes, Stella, Adam, Flack, and Sid were all there, standing around the light table. Mac was standing at the head of the table.

I pulled the door open and stepped in, wondering what the hell was going on. Sid rarely came up from autopsy, and I thought Flack was on a case in Brooklyn.

Standing across from Mac at the light table, Danny flipped the switch and the lights came flickering on. I hadn't noticed it before, but spelled out, it said, "Catherine, will you marry me?"

Gasping, I looked up at the detective in charge of the lab and covered my mouth. He was holding a little ring box.

By the time he was standing in front of me, I was crying, my hand still over my lips. Getting down on one knee, he opened the ring box.

"Cat, you are the most amazing woman in the world. I've watched you work so hard on cases, and every day I've fallen more and more in love with you. The two years we've been dating have been amazing, and I want to be by your side for many more years. Marry me?"

The ring was stunning, a diamond with what looked like tiny garnets set in a gold band.

I couldn't get the words out, but I knew what I wanted to say. Instead, I nodded, and Mac slid the ring onto my left hand and stood up, pulling me into a bear hug.

Everyone was cheering. After a quick kiss, Mac let me go and I got hugs from the other detectives, pathologist, and lab tech.

"Let me see the ring," Lindsay said when I got to her for a hug. I showed her my hand, and she smiled hugely at me and then gave me a big hug. "Congrats!"

"Lindsay, I wanted to ask, will you be my maid of honor?" I questioned.

She thought for a second, and then answered, "Of course, I would love to be your maid of honor."

After cleaning up, we all went for dinner at the Italian place down the block.
